Changing the sound on an airplane!

Post by koshyajit »

July 5, 2022

Dear YS Members;
A rookie here! I promise I searched the old posts (unsuccessfully) before making this post. I recently downloaded and added a DHC-800 which has jet sounds attached to it. How do I change it to the standard propeller sounds?
Thanks in advance,
John Yohannan :)

I believe this is done by changing out the THRAFTBN and THRMILIT lines in each plane's dat file with PROPELLR and PROPVMIN. So, to compare, the dat file entries for the stock A-6 and C-130, respectively:

Code: Select all

REM A-6 INTRUDER
IDENTIFY "A-6_INTRUDER"
CATEGORY ATTACKER
AFTBURNR FALSE #HAVE AFTERBURNER?
THRAFTBN 0.0t #THRUST WITH AFTERBURNER
THRMILIT 8.4t #THRUST AT MILITARY POWER
WEIGHCLN 12.0t #WEIGHT CLEAN
WEIGFUEL 6.0t #WEIGHT OF FUEL
WEIGLOAD 8.1t #WEIGHT OF PAYLOAD
FUELABRN 0.0kg #FUEL CONSUMPTION WHEN USING AFTERBURNER
FUELMILI 0.45kg #FUEL CONSUMPTION AT MILITARY POWER

Code: Select all

REM C-130
IDENTIFY "C-130_HERCULES"
CATEGORY NORMAL
AFTBURNR FALSE #HAVE AFTERBURNER?
PROPELLR 18000HP #PROPELLER ENGINE
PROPVMIN 150kt
THRSTREV 0.4 #EFFICIENCY OF THRUST REVERSER
WEIGHCLN 34.0t #WEIGHT CLEAN
WEIGFUEL 20.0t #WEIGHT OF FUEL
WEIGLOAD 20.0t #WEIGHT OF PAYLOAD
FUELABRN 0.0kg #FUEL CONSUMPTION WHEN USING AFTERBURNER
FUELMILI 0.80kg #FUEL CONSUMPTION AT MILITARY POWER

Some propeller planes were given jet engines in order to add other animation possibilities. Like my C-130 "Fat Albert", I think I made it a jet engine to get burning rockets for takeoff

Okay, didn't work! :( I am comparing the .DAT files of two different DHC8-400 airplanes. One got the correct propeller sounds and one got jet-engine sounds. The .DAT files are identical in every way! :( :(

I think HawkbitAlpha is right! The "propeller" line in the .DAT-file is the one that is supposed to control the propeller sounds, but I think that decaff_42 is also right. I think that the DHC-8 400 add-ons that I have were configured as jets even though they are turbo-props (I think) because adding the proper "propeller" line in their .DAT-files didn't change the sound. Oh well!!
