I was thinking about a conventional circiut, but the track edges are elevated using elevation grids, to give room to move in in 3D. I'm thinking the tracks can be either closed loops or long trecks over mountainside and etc.
You could use the the YSGP tracks that Ice made from last year. Although they may be a little too small for your idea.

What if the racer crashes? Will they start back at the starting point or maybe a checkpoint? Or perhaps disqualified from the race?

Possibly have Vince's checkpoint system to count laps, and crashed players respawn at the start, but still with the same number of laps.

You'd have to arrange the checkpoints carefully to avoid lap fraud though.

The races should be a little bit realistic to make it more interesting.

I think you should DEFINITELY turn blacking out on when racing. That would make it hard for the racers to take a corner without slowing down.

Also, I think you should kick racers out from a race of they crash. I didn't see racers go up in a fireball and then magically re-appear in a brand new vehicle in real life.

Make the race planes fuel capacity REALLY low. So they have to take a pit stop. Their dats. should be so that they can do quick takeoffs and landings.

I say each race should be about 30 minutes long. One hour might be too much. You'll get bored because watching Micheal Shumacher taking a turn in real life is one thing, watching virtual planes go round and round a circuit is another.

Okay, MAJOR lag time, but the laptop I posted with apparently did not post to the thread. But, I say that if a racer crashes, they get to respawn on their current lap. However, each racer is allowed a set number of crashes per race. Maybe the classic 3 lives of other games? As for length, I say that over a variety of tracks, it would be difficult to have them all around the same distance races But I do like the timed race idea, such as a Le Mans 24 hour styled thing, racer with the most laps by the end of, say 30-45 or so minutes, wins?

In great thanks to Taskforce 58, we can now use most aircraft in the Down in Flames package! This creates a whole new first tier, and halves the starting budget.

On the undecided aircraft, the SBD, TBD, TBF, D3A1, and B5N2 are all single-engined bombers. Should these be allowed, be put into the special class, or dropped all together? Also, the Me 163B-1A is undecided, as it is veryu small, fast, and more maneuverable than most other aircraft. Yay or nay to this?

Okay, I realize that I am impatient, but can I get some more feedback on this? If I don't get feedback, then it will become a bit hard to decide on what to do with the undecided aircraft. Also, for maps we can use the ones from the 2011 YSGP found here: http://forum.ysfhq.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=154 . I've ran through a couple of the raceways several times, and they are not overly complicated, and are easy to follow. This will definitely help once we get to the higher tiers.

Just my two cents:
awesome idea, but to get it going I think the most important thing is to get going.

get a minimum package out with a scenery with some tracks on it. or a couple of sceneries.
Use YSGP for the time being, or even the track in my Lybia map will do.
Then, get some planes out there in nice racing colours --we already got a bunch like that-- and start.

Personally I like racing in regular aircraft in realistic colours. And with mountains on the sides, so that when you screw up you die in a ball of fire.
I'd say 5 laps and you're done. then later when this works well and people join, build the project from there.
You'll need a server I guess, maybe a homepage (weebly.com).

Tip on scenery modding: it's easy.
Just get my old Formula YS maps and Lybia maps and save the individual mountains as .TER files.
Then build a track using the files, recolour the mountains and ground, and add some ground objects that try to shoot you.
thats about it. the only thing that limits you then is your own imagination.

With permission from the YSGP and other race tracks builders I'm sure you can build a pretty fun arsenal of scenery building items, and people will slowly add to the collection.

Hope you get it going man. (Might even get me out on a server one day...)

I'm surprised nobody mentioned MH3W's maps. They're awesome for racing, specially for prop aircrafts. A few modifications should allow jets to get in too. I tried out the Raceway 3 & Raceway 1, the former working fine with enhanced maneuverability aircrafts (e.g. F-22, Typhoon, Su-30MKI) while the latter needs ONLY one deleting and it works.

Also, I think we should not add too many aircrafts down the list; gives my headaches...

Nice to to see you, Ice. Just start of simple and go from there. Make rules and implement ideas as they're needed and/or wanted.

Okay, seeing as I have enough support to actually go into this, let's try it. One thing that I really need is a server, so if anybody can offer one for a couple of hours on a weekend, that would be great. Also, I want those that want to enter it post their team, starting aircraft, and remaining budget. If you want to apply a custom paint scheme to your vintage aircraft, ask TF58, otherwise I believe that all of the other aircraft are HQP/GAC and are available to be repainted. So without further ado, let's get this started!

I am capable of putting up a server over the weekends. I just installed some new ram a couple of months ago too, so it should be no problem. As you should recall, I have hosted YS servers before.

I'm all ready to PM Booger on a time to set up a server, I've just been waiting for people to select their aircraft/team and anything else. There are the maps in the aircraft list post, and the aircraft are not hard to come by. So, any of you who wanted to race, let's get these applications filled out!

I am all ready. The sooner you PM me, the sooner I forward my ports and set up my DNS and get the server up.

As I've said before, I'm waiting for applications. But I figured that I'm starting the idea, why not set the example? Also, the original post has been updated to include all of the set parameters.

P-39 in racing colors? I'd love to see that.

Go nuts on the DiF repaints, guys!

Could I get some applications? It's all set up right now, just relying on you guys to post your apps. Keep in mind, you can go crazy repainting TF58's aircraft! Utilize pieces of the camouflage, use your imagination! Here might be an idea: Image
Also, try adding sponsors!
