[PLEASE READ] Official YSFHQ Server

Post by Fariiniq » Sun May 05, 2013 10:22 pm

Hello everyone! :D

We've been discussing a new idea at another topic. It's a way of getting our community to shine again! We need absolutely everyone reading this to vote on this idea and tell everyone about this topic! If a majority of the votes agrees with this concept and we get the approval of YSFHQ staff, we'll set the server up!

Concept of an official YSFlight Headquarters server

INTRODUCTION
To bring the online community surrounding the YSFlight Simulator to it’s best abilities, capabilities and full potential we propose that an official YSFlight Headquarters multipurpose server should be formed and administrated as described in the following way .

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
We feel that our relatively small community should not be separated to bits and pieces. We should all be able to enjoy flying online at a central server at any time of our choosing (24/7). All kinds of pilots, planes & missions should be welcomed regardless of any affiliation with a squadron or virtual airline. This would in our opinion increase activity in the community and in simple terms bring the fun back. In addition we feel that this would attract a substantial number of new active community members. For different kind of users to be able to use the mentioned server with each other in a welcomed and friendly atmosphere, we feel that the server should be run under democratic terms. It would theoretically be equally owned by all active community members. For convenience, maintenance and daily administration should not be repeatedly voted upon but instead should be executed according to a code of administration; which would be voted upon by the community as a whole. This code of administration should be revised regularly to maintain the operation of the server to the liking and preferences of it’s users. The administration team should follow crucial decision such as map & addon choices according to a vote cast publicly in the community. And in addition other bigger decision should be voted on publicly and transparently in the community.

THE ADMINISTRATION
As mentioned, while everyone has a say in how the server operates we need to have a small administration team that takes care of the day-to-day administration. The team should include 3 equal “Server Administrator”s. These administrators would be chosen at the same time of voting the code of administration and the administrators should also be revised when the code is. For the purpose of events or such the team would have the right to nominate 1-5 “Server Moderators” that would help the team under their supervision. In administrational disagreements the team will cast a vote and the 2 winning votes overrule the 1 losing vote. Moderators do not have a right to vote. Even the smallest administrational issues can though be taken to a community-wide vote if even one community member makes the initiative to request for such a vote.

YSFHQ AFFILIATION
We propose that YSFHQ would accept this server as it’s main YSFlight online server. This should eg. mean that all YSFHQ events should be held at this server. Also YSFHQ would commit to promote this server within it’s capabilities and not give direct support to unofficial servers. Other servers should though be held valuable and naturally be allowed to operate inside the community. We request that YSFHQ would provide a forum for the administration team of this server to communicate and smoothly exchange information. Naturally following the democratic guidelines of the server, this forum would be accessible for all YSFHQ members for ultimate transparency in operating the server.

TECHNICAL DETAILS
The server should run from a Virtual Private Server. The VPS should be in the name of one of the Server Administrators. Payments should be handled by the Server Administrators in any type of agreement they wish to make. The administrators encourage community members that which to support the server to send contributions to the administrations. The administrator that holds the VPS should share the remote access information to the 2 other administrators. This information should naturally be subject to an ethical non-disclosure agreement.

I don't dis-agree with the concept, but I am not quite clear on some details.
Like, will it cost anything? and; if so, who will be paying for it?
We cannot allow a democratic vote to say person X must do this & do that AT THEIR EXPENSE.
If we are to have a community server then the community
may have to pay for it. Just to make things fair.
I myself would not mind paying a small part to accomodate the action,
even though I have not been able to actually spend any server-time with anyone.
This subject may have to be addressed in order to facilitate the idea.

Fariiniq has been paying fo a VPS for as long as I can remember, he obviously has no troubles funding it, so you don't have to worry about that.

Me likey, as long as the server is located in Europe :D Better connection for all of us, I mean the infrastructure is better here than in the US or somewhere else (excepting South Korea).

Has the topic of ATC been addressed as yet? There may be some days when the server may be wall to wall with aircraft civilian and military that is my hope anyway.Any chance of a permanent ATC staff on board?

Heyyyaa!

Thanks for the votes so far :) and loving the poster ray! :D

Yeah we discussed the funding in the topic that's linked in my first post :) I have a VPS running so that's not a problem and it doesn't cost that much. Of course as mentioned we would accept any help funding it. It should be a kind of "if you flew on the server and liked it, feel free to donate and help" -type of concept :)

The topic of ATC hasn't been much covered yet. Well we have a lot of people here that I'm sure would love to do ATC and are quite good at it, so I'm sure they would like to jump in if the server has lots of traffic :) A good idea might be to do a weekly or monthly ATC session? When we had that if was really popular but it died because it wasn't "stable" enough. Matter of organization i guess :D Well anyways, would be awesome to have ATC :D

@Hammer, yeah definitely in Europe. UK actually. Should have good ping anyways even to farthest locations.

As I get more and more comfortable over the real life radio, I would love to be an ATC member and hopefully give some of you guys a taste of what the real world comms are like. This idea is great and I'm glad I could help bring this up.

It would be funny trying to have everyone fly in a Mass Flight, all in B747s

I'm good at ATC IRL :)

Traffic Cessnock, Cessna 152 HUZ, Taxi's runway 35, Traffic Cessnock.
Traffic Cessnock, Cessna 152 HUZ, Crosses Threshold 17, Traffic Cessnock.
Traffic Cessnock, Cessna 152 HUZ, Lines up runway 35, overhead departure to the eastern training area, Traffic Cessnock.

Once you know the terminology, it's pretty lickedy split VNAF. :)
I am an accountant working full-time (and some). I'm not here as often as I would like to be. Send a message if you need me. There are a few people in the community who can get in contact with me urgently if you need - don't be afraid to ask. I just don't check here as frequently as I used to. Sorry!
