What do you want most for YSFlight?

Post by CalvT »

I'm curious to find out what people want most for YSFlight. I know we have the Wishlist, but what do people really want the most?

Here is an explanation of the options:

Weather: Wind gusts, rain, snow, switch between day and night, etc

Better Physics: This explains itself

Better Scenery Graphics: Any graphics that aren't to do with aircraft. Real grass, better smoke trails, explosions (though these have got better)

Better Aircraft Graphics : Graphics to do with Aircraft - better HUD, support for textures, etc

Multiplayer: Ability to fly Pilot, Co-Pilot, Gunner, etc on servers

Plugins: The ability to add plugins that affect the way YSFlight works

Happy Voting!

Probably a weather system or at least, effect (maybe rain and snow?)

Also, officially supports plugins if someone wants to.

I'd say Plugins that directly interface with the game, something like how Garry's Mod allows Addons to Manipulate the Source Engine would allow for all of the above to happen. however instance, a Language would need to be added as some sort of way for the Plugin to communicate with the Executable. for instance, Lua. Since Soji doesn't want to give up any details of YSFlight's Innards, I can only base what YSFlight Runs on out of what he's blogged about, which IMO, is possibly some Variant of C. Now, I'm no coder, Hell, I Tried Visual Basic and gave up, but I'm hoping to try Lua over the summer if i remember. All In all, we'll just have to hope that Soji's lurking around here.

But wouldn't a plugin do all of the mentioned things in ys?

Also I think the key elements that need some updating or need to be implemented are the physics and some variety in weather.

Who wouldn't want to skid sideways at 180 knots on an icy runway? Also maybe some realistic drag when setting flaps or air brakes. Oh and making crash/damage models. Skidding on the runway with only half the plane!

@BARACUZ You can adjust the drag co-efficient for flaps and spoilers in the .Dat files ;)

BLOODY UNIQUE WEAPONS, not these measly generic "AAM", "AGM", no, actually modding weapons like we would with aircraft. And yes, Soji wants YS to have no nukes, but he can always put a cap on damage, falloff and range of explosion.

All I ask for is a revamped net-code that eliminates distance lag or ATLEAST diminishes it significantly such as the other simulators like LockOn and FSX.

I voted for weather, but I have a feeling I should have voted for plugins. The two things I'd like to see most are weather and day/night cycles (gradual dimming in the evening and brightening in the morning would be close enough).

Open the source code already.

I can't extend what is already closed.

I have got to say that I completely understand the captain's desire to protect his code.

What's the benefit? He's not selling YS...

Well no one has offered him money I guess...

And if someone did I don't think it will go for much...

Once a code is made open source it is difficult or impossible to close it up again. The benefit is that the captain's vision for the game doesn't get replaced by wave after wave of changes and he is still in control of the game into which he's put so much work.

I'm not saying he should not consider taking on assistants, but I can also see why he wants to maintain control over the primary game code.

I'm just sick and tired of putting all my effort into a closed source application with no documentation or plugin support at the least. Development on YS seems to not be a thing and I don't want to see the game go down the drain due to stubborn pride.

Plugins would acomplish all of this due to how plugins in general are designed. they're designed to PLUG IN to a application and modify it's behavior without Changing the entire executable.

Take the phonebloks kickstarter or whatever that happened a while back:
For those of you who don't know, The Phonebloks was supposed to be a Smartphone with "Modules" that could be moved around, added and removed over time with the use of something similar to ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) Sockets. For instance, if you needed more batttery power and more space, but didn't need a camera or a Bluetooth adaptor, you could remove the modules for the camera and Bluetooth. YSFlight could work in the same way, if Soji would work to find some way to set it up like that. Say you wanted Better Weather. You could Install a weather Plugin, and upon starting YSFlight, it would initialize by allowing it's Process memory in RAM to be modified by a interpreter in /plugins. say there's a file in there that is called weather.ypl, which is the weather plugin i talked about before. Now, during this time in which the memory is modified by the interpreter to add the code into the executable temporarily. After all plugins are loaded, the Process' memory in RAM is locked back up, and YSFlight begins normal loading procedure.
Then, upon the executable Unloading, no modifications are made to the executables, making the modifications Temporary.
