65K Landing Challenge

Post by Stingx » Wed Jun 10, 2015 3:56 am

So... I modded a stock hawaii with some more ground objects, including patrick's airrier. The airrier is south down yonder of Lihue (requires beefy plane) at an altitude of ~65000 ft. Me, M88, and Dision took a stab at landing on the carrier.

Hahaha none. It can't be done.
Challenge: Land on the deck (deck not water) of the airrier with any aircraft (a P-L-A-N-E not a spaceship) and post a screenshot of your glorious achievement on this thread. The map is running on CP's server atm. Here's the fld if you want to try it offline.

Welp, I failed. (But only because my dad told me to go to bed before I had a chance to succeed...)

But before I go, I have some tips.

I found that the HQP F-4E with 100% fuel is pretty good for the job. Use afterburners the whole trip. Take off from Lihue, head 180 deg and climb to 50,000ft. Once the Airrier shows up on your radar, reduce radar radius to 25 miles. As soon as the Airrier shows on your 25 mile radar, change heading to 090 deg. Set radar to 100 miles again, and wait until the Airrier is at the edge of your radar screen. Next, turn 270 deg and reduce radar to 50 miles. Once the Airrier shows up on your 50 mile radar, climb to 65,050ft. Use your velocity indicator to make sure you stay level, and reduce speed to 170kts IAS. Gear, flaps, breaks/spoilers. Good luck.

2nd method: Raptor like Flake.

I just raptored to get out there haha. The f104 has just enough speed and altitude control to make it (it's a tight squeeze!)

Forget the F-4E, because the F-4S is the way to go.

Also, I'm not gonna say its impossible to do in the stock F-104, but it would be ridiculously hard without raptoring. This is given that its maximum speed is MACH 1.8, and it has a very small wing area. Still, I know it was super tricky, so nice work.

SR-71, here we come! Mig-31, -25 could also work fairly well for this. U-2?

I will be trying this later tonight!

Sitting on the Airrier a second time in my F-4S,... it really seems to be the best plane for the job at the moment.

@Swift, you know not what you speak.

@Decaff, the BB was pretty close, so long as you know how to line up. Mig-31/25 should be decent to try. The U-2 would best, so long as you don't mind waiting for hours.

Woke up just in time to see Copper grab the leading edge to catch the wire early.
Had to look twice as he made it look so easy.
Smooth and uneventful as a regular water carrier landing.
Training film quality.
Congrats!

Bomb and I spent probably 2 hours in the stock F-15 and constantly bounced. It was so frustrating!

Am I doing something wrong? I couldn't find it in an SR-71, so I jumped in an F/A-37 Talon with 75% fuel and cruised south from Lihue at Mach >4 until it ran out of fuel (~20 minutes later) and I still didn't find it, checking the 100 mile radar monitor every 10 seconds or so. I also tried to open the .fld in scenery editor, but it wouldn't open.
