Rocket Launch

Post by Shiny Rice »

So, after seeing so many posts about getting back to action in the combat side, a reporting thread that was mildly sucessful (but there aren't many people posting right now) and Midnight Rambler trying to go to war with our squad and then failing miserably because he's on the other side of the world, here's my contribution to trying to restore the combat side of YS at least as it was in 2011. And if my idea worked back then, I do think that it will now. Do some of you guys remember the Great Urban Furball? It was hosted in Neil's server and people like Philster and Dan were there. It was great fun indeed.

Here's what I came up this year. It's called Rocket Launch, and its name says it all. It's a good old furball with teams, but with a twist. One team, defends the launch site from the other team, that will attack the other one. And you might say, "YEAH BUT DOESN'T THE OTHER TEAM HAVE TO DASTROY TEH ROCKAT?"
Well, no, they can't. It would be too easy, wouldn't it? The attacker team has to gain aerial superiority at the end of the round and then, they have to send a fighter armed with A2G ordinance and then they would destroy it.

Some of you might know where this comes from. Yes, I got it straight from Ace Combat 4's "Shattered Skies" mission. I tell you, I had great fun with this mission, and I would love to see something similar in YS. I still haven't decided how long it will be, though. I think it'll last about five minutes each round, I don't want to make it too long.

I'm posting this here because I need some feedback before making this full blown, and I still haven't decided the map. But I do have the rules. Here they are:

- Vulching is allowed.

- Do not destroy the rocket under any circumstances until the end of the round.

- Use any weapons that you see fit to fight with (yes, even bombs)

- Do not use any plane which mesh quality is inferior to Birdfarm (I'm also thinking to have someone record this or record this myself and upload it to Youtube, to get some more publishing of YS out there)

This is it for now. I'll go hunt for suitable maps with launch pads, if there are any, but I have to give it a shot. Thoughts?

Sounds awesome. I can help with filming, BTW. Only problem would be the large Bandicam water mark. I'm stuck with the free version right now.

I think that you might have to do it, since I won't get a new comp in some time. And I haven't found a suitable map yet. Anyone have an idea for one?

in stead of trying to film it live, save the online play as a replay and go back and film it later. Should let you get a few more fps out of YSF when you don't have the server business going on at the same time.

I haven't had any FPS drop on this machine unless I run Grigor's DF Generator at maximum capacity. Every other time I get 60 +FPS regardless of whether or not I'm recording. A replay would allow for a lot more coverage and the simulation of multiple cameras.

Sounds like a great idea. Only 2 problems here:
I'm on the GMT +8 side (essentially the other side of the world to most people)
And Intel atom got stolen.
Has there been any team organisation yet? I would really like to join after there was one event that was canceled here

EDIT: found the computer, but still...

I can help out with filming as well. I only have one exam left and my PC should be back by Tuesday so I will be definitely attending this.

Sounds like fun! I'm in for it. But, I don't know any more about a good launch site map than anybody else.
Am I back? Probably not.

Then we'll grab the replay, but we'll only have 15 minutes worth of raw footage to make a video, from what I've heard. And I'm not making a list of who's coming or not yet, I will make teams when I've found a map, and see what time is the best for us all. I really would like to know what other combat peeps think about this.

Looking around, if we wanted to keep with the island theme, then we might be able to use the Wake Island map here: http://www.freewebs.com/matth3w1/downloads.htm . Not sure about modifying the map with a rocket, though.

Thanks for the sugesstion, I'll take a look at it. And we're not going to add a rocket, I said adding a launch pad and someone manning a rocket.

I don't know, I think Wake is a bit too small for our needs. I'll keep searching in my archives though. I haven't looked at many maps that I have downloaded.

On a second thought, Wake would a good map. Little, but we don't need much map for a furball, really.

Just put a carrier group off 50 miles to get the other team's base there.

Nah, 50 miles is too much distance to cover. We can already spawn in the air. The only modification that we should do to that map would be the addition of a launch pad.

This is a good idea, I suggest that you have one team with an American and European and aircraft ie. (F-15s, F-16, F-18, euro fighters, rafeles) and a team with russian aircraft ie. (anything that starts with Su or MiG)

I actually think it would be an event where squads would finally see action, and with their planes. I say we should make it more like Ace Combat, without restrictions on planes. Without being overpowered, of course.

To be honest, I've been busy with other stuff and with the time I have I can't do much. Maybe I'll publish the event next week, but not today.
