October Training Objective: General Ground Attack
That said, I am eager to continue working with everyone to make high quality combat training freely available. The topic discussed for the next session is general, or introductory ground attack. I understand that Dragon_Mech and Patrick have been working on adapting Patrick's Bombing Range map for our purposes, and would like to thank both of them. I can't currently commit to a solid time, but would like to get the ball rolling by asking everyone which areas of ground attack interests you most. Ground attack missions are the bread and butter PvE combat task for YS combat pilots, and come in many varieties with their own particular challenges. Here are a few categories as I would define them:
Close Air Support (CAS): This involves ground attack in support of friendly troops in contact with enemy forces. The best example of this in YS is the automatically generated ground attack/base defense mission, in which friendly and enemy forces are spawned to fight over a friendly base. CAS requires pilots to hit small moving targets, requiring pilots to lead their targets or use AGM's, and frequently involves hostile defensive fire. The relatively short life expectancy of the friendly ground forces encourages pilots to work quickly.
Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD/DEAD): Since YS has no suppression mechanics, all of these missions are realistically DEAD. I'm a big supporter of hitting the defenses first, as this lets attackers pick off remaining targets more or less at will. Stock AAA and SAMs are fairly easy gun and bomb targets at low altitude, but can prove deadly for pilots who grow complacent. Be aware of your surroundings, and never directly overfly AAA.
Anti-Shipping/Anti-Surface Warfare(ASuW): A personal favorite of mine, ship hunting can be challenging and rewarding. Udaloy destroyers with their 8km range re-targeting missiles make particularly dangerous foes which encourage long range attacks, either with high altitude bombing or low altitude rocketry. Bomb splash damage range is severely restricted over water, putting a premium on direct hits. Ships without landing decks can move online, including small, well armed pirate boats, so consider loading a few AGM's for these targets.
High Value Target Strike: Aircraft carriers, runways, and refueling areas are all fairly easy to hit, but may be well defended in a team battle scenario. Fast attacks with unguided weapons often work well here. (I know runways are rarely destructible, but a few maps designed for online play may feature destructible or partially destructible runways.)
Strategic Bombing: Heavy bombers can drop dozens of bombs, but getting the most out of such aircraft can be tricky as they usually drop their weapons in a straight line, and ground targets are not always so obliging.
Is there any area in particular you all would like to explore in more depth? Think I skipped something important? Join in on the discussion!

Re: October Training Objective: General Ground Attack
it has already been done and the modified map is ready to be downloaded at Patrick's website. all players need to do is redownload the Bomb Range map and replace the old one. Patrick has replaced the hangers at the Frankfurt airport ( the main airport) with hangers that act as refit and refuel areas. all other airports have refueling vehicles at them. the addition of the refueling and rearming points are the only changes that have been made to the map. the rest of the map is almost perfect for SEAD/DEAD training. i say almost because it lacks moving ground targets.Bombcat wrote:I understand that Dragon_Mech and Patrick have been working on adapting Patrick's Bombing Range map for our purposes, and would like to thank both of them.

this is a great idea. i know that the attack helecopter enthusiasts will want to participate in this kind of training.MD5Ray01 wrote:I could help a little bit with this, especially with helicopters in a ground attack role.

i was incorrect with this statement. Patrick's bomb range map does have moving ground targets.Dragon_Mech wrote:i say almost because it lacks moving ground targets.
