What is the best VA Map?

Post by bernholm » Wed Feb 27, 2013 9:20 am

There are four stunning VA maps out there right now - Hawaii, the Philippines, Canary Islands, and Tohoku. Each has its own pros and cons:
Tohoku is a neat low-detailed map but has limited airports and is quite small.
Hawaii is a favorite for airlines and features a wide selection of airports, but it can be a bit hard to get your bearings and it still doesn't allows for really REALLY long-haul flights.
The Philippines is a new add-on with stunning detail, size, and airports, with a wide selection of airports and enough room for some seriously long flights (as far as nice maps go). However low-RAM users, or users with bad graphics cards or the wrong program (OpenGL or Direct3D) can encounter lag and SHAKING :( It also needs a bit of a big computer to run on a server for VAs. (Actually YSFLIGHT has a sort of lag-imposed limit on the size of maps and therefore the length of flights, so you can't really leave the short-haul zone here  )
Canary Islands are nice and compact, with a good choice of airports, but it's not quite as big as Hawaii, and *again* doesn't offer true long-haul (for YSFLIGHT) routes.
There are others too, but these are the 3 I can think of and it seems like a good list.
Thanks welshy for the Canary Islands add.

For me it is without doubt the Hawaii.
The map of Hawaii has a long life, and is used today by many VA, in other words the Hawaii "was a pioneer map for virtual airlines" :)

Tbh Every VA map is my favourite, I can't really narrow it down to one. A VA would be a boring place if there was a map the virtual pilots didn't particularly like.

HawaiitoSocal has it all. From short hops to epic two hour fuel squeezing runs you can do your homework to. I would really like to see this map get popular with hosts.

Erm are you sure it's best for servers? Cos it's laggy on single player, and that is made worse in multiplayer. Quite a few people (like me) lag a lot on servers that run that map.

Honestly, it doesn't matter what map you fly. Important is you are flying and having fun. Id say all of them :)

I know this is a bump, but Megadodo would probably be your best bet. It's likely the best map made for long civilian flights

Has anybody checked-out the Moro map 060303 for suitability?
There are any number of flights available on that map. Some are pretty damn lengthy. I don't know how well it would work on a server though either.

^I have hosted the moroMAP once on my computer and if you have a fast processor and decent GPU, it's not too bad at all.

On another note, a little self-promotion here :P. I wonder if VAs would fancy using the Atlantica map for the flight ops. I made it specifically for that purpose but I realize the Serosa end is a little laggy. Still, VAs are welcome to use any of my maps if they so wish.

Back on the topic, I pretty much like most of the multi-airport maps out there-Hawaii, Guam with Saipan, Tohoku, the moroMAP, West Japan, UK+ etc etc.

Seriously though, I don't get why Hawaii is the only map hosted on servers, I mean, there are other maps just as good on FPS as Hawaii that provide a good change in pace so to speak.

My general rant: I will call them blended winglets, not Sharklets; There is no CEO, it's just simply put, an Airbus 319/320/321, or the 320NEO, 321NEO etc. I didn't land IN DAL, I landed AT DAL. On the other hand, I did land in Dallas.
