Centralized airline server

Post by Dan » Mon Mar 24, 2014 8:54 pm

Hello guys, here's my recent idea. At the moment most virtual airlines are separated into their individual servers such as Hawaiian Airways, Penguin Airways and Fast Airways. This current layout means that there is very little interaction between all Virtual Airline pilots. This is not necessarily a bad thing, i mean some members like to have a bit of peace and quiet, however unfortunately it isn't helping the current status of virtual airline activity.

My vision is to have one dedicated virtual airline server that would serve all virtual airlines. A server in which you can fly among other like minded virtual airline pilots, flying on routes with proper virtual airline traffic crossing across the virtual skies to different destinations. The server could even host the latest edition of YS Air Traffic Control if it was to make a come back, which would be great. I tested this idea a year ago when i released my canary islands map, we basically had all the virtual airlines under one roof which for the summer raised the whole activity of virtual airlines. I believe that if this idea was to materialize we would create more interest and raise activity in the virtual airline section which it really needs at this current time. It would be interesting to see other opinions on this, so please get involved as that would be much appreciated.

This is a great idea. It also reflects how real airlines are - they all have to share the same skies.

I want to see this happen.

YSU was entertaining the idea of a centralized server where the rules of VACC would be enforced. I'm definitely in favour of this, YSU or not. I'd appreciate anyone that could host this to do so, the civi community needs it.

If money is put towards it I can discuss with TB1 the idea of sharing our server. Could we host on the WW3 server via another port?

I really like this idea! It would make organizing Air Traffic Control sessions and future civilian community events much easier. As it would be all under one roof.

Why would money be needed?

I believe TB1 has to pay for hosting.

We can certainly have this hosted on the WW3 server on another port, at no additional charge. I'm not sure how bad the lag will be, but it's definitely worth a shot.

Reply to this with links to airline packs that should be installed. Also what maps we should use. That way we can create a mini YS install with all these addons, and distribute them to server hosts.

Its been proposed numerous times by numerous people. Let's get it going.

I haven't heard of any issues with lag on the WW3 server at the moment running by itself. Personally I think running the two on one server (that is just a spare PC from what I remember) will end up lagging pretty badly, but there's no harm in trying.

I am wholeheartedly behind this idea and if lag does become an issue I would ask the treasurer to put forth a cost proposal to fund an independent server.

We do have quite a bit of money to spend.

This is a brilliant idea! Especially if it piggybacks on the ww3 server.
I feel like it would show more support for the civilian pilots, at least in ysfhq's official capacity.

I believe TB1 has to pay for hosting.
Well yeah, so do I. But I wouldn't expect people to pay me to use the server...

It's a good idea and can now be run properly, even if it's unlikely to get a whole bunch of people outside of VA's on there regularly. People tend to gravitate towards a full server where they can chat, regardless of map or mode (free for all, civilian, military). Should be interesting to see how it goes :)

A fee for the server would only be necessary if there where lag issue for piggybacking.

Would this be strictly a "VA only" server or would civilian/commercial non-VA pilots also be allowed to join in on the fun anytime there's an ATC session? I'm talking if someone wanted to fly a third-party airline's jet like a Fedex 757 or a private business jet, something to that extent. If not that's cool with me, just curious is all.

I think it should be anything. VA's will mostly use it for the lack of having to worry about combat and people like me can just get on there and do a general aviation, commercial, private, or whatever flight. I would love for there to be a server to practice ATC skills on and just to have fun in a semi-controlled environment that resembles how things really are.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but my take was its a strictly civilian server but not just for VAs any civil aircraft is welcome if its loaded on the server. And another errant thought here no flying concrete blocks please.Nothing spoils the illusion faster than a mach 1 concrete block.
