I don't want to fly alone...

Post by acf492 » Tue Jul 07, 2015 3:16 am

Hi,

It's me, acf492. I've quietly returned to YSFlight after a fairly lengthy absence.

Over the past three weeks, I have looked at the online servers, and I haven't seen much activity. Is everyone flying in offline mode only? I don't want to fly in offline mode, it just doesn't feel the same as flying on a server with other pilots. Perhaps I will have to wait for an event?

Back around 2012-2013, there was always some activity online. Even though it was usually just a bunch of fighters in combat, at least I had company when flying into HNL.

It would be really nice if I had the chance to fly with some ATC present, or even to be a controller myself. But just like I don't want to fly alone, being a lone controller is even less fun.

-acf492
I'm back.

We will be having some civilian flights and ATC sessions coming up soon, I think. I'm planning one in early August. Sometimes they happen spontaneously.

Ha about time you posted.

Anyway. I usually fly around CP's or Pats server around 8-11pm eastern US time.

That's one thing you have to learn to accept and make the most of. It either getting you butt kicked by the fighter guys or flying a solo flight from Japan to Los angeles

Nothing beats stalinium

But I think this topic really brings up one fairly unacknowledged issue of the game: that there isn't as much spontaneous activity as before. Few years back when I joined, there were always people on servers. But nowadays, only a handful of people actually get online, and most activity is confined to aerobatics events.

The getting "shot down" thing is why I have always endorsed turning off all weapons period on non-combat servers. Occasionally I will host a server for commercial/civilian flight and I turn off all weapons. No one can shoot you down in that instance - no weapons to be had.

On the other hand, even though I announce I have a server upcoming, no one shows up. If at all, just one player. Could be bad timing on my part, but it happens no matter when I host it. That too on weekends. If more people showed up I would be more than happy to host a server more often. Need I say "more"? (Pun intended).

My two cents:
Most over-used phrase of 2020: "New normal". Can we stop with that already? Pandemics do not last forever, and things will eventually go back to normal.

If I may gentlemen I believe the server frequenting issue my be in the realm of confusion over server versions being used.Fer instance you down load the most current stable version of Ysflight but the server client my not be the match for the hosts version.A x-compatibility issue of sorts. Its not what you would call plug and play friendly. ;)

^Right now most, if not all people are using the 2011 or 2013 versions, both of which are actually compatible with each other (if I am not mistaken) since Soji did not change the net code for connections. I am still using the 2011 version.

Speaking of the new versión.

You can no longer fly alone. on the stock maps there are a few AI planes flying around. Really good people they just fly and won't bother you.

Yeah, and I modded that A-4 at Atsugi to be an available wingman, just in case you need help.

This particularly bothers me as I see people trying to log on with the latest version (logical).
They are prevented and receive an error message that they need to find an old version to get on.
We may be losing new people from this quirk that get a bad first impression of YS and just give up!

I've started using the newest version. I've not seen any problems when I've used the new client connected to the stock console server. Maybe it's time to move on from the old server?

You're right! 2011 and 2013 Ys used NetCode 20110207 but 2015 uses 20150425.

2015 will consistently and eventually lock-up on my server.
I'm just waiting for Flake to get all of the bugs out of OYS.
I don't believe Soji is going to interrupt his bird watching to fix 2015.
We are fortunate to have a code guru like Flake (who is both intimately familiar with the game and passionately committed)
to not only get us out of this mess, but to make things better, and to be more aware and responsive to problems.
We just need a little patience for him to get his magic ready.

You are too kind.

I need to sort out the connectivity issues with OYS - something that will take some work!
I think I need to make minor changes to the way data is being sent. I hope to update soon!
But apart from that the server in and of itself is pretty stable I think.

I'm surprised people don't hang out on CP's server like they did on 42South.
