Flying Boats And Spy Planes

Post by decaff_42 » Sat Nov 05, 2011 2:08 am

Hey, I've looked around YSFHQ and other affiliated sights and cannot find a lot of flying boats, hence this request.

I'm looking to fly a passenger plane similar to some of these: http://www.clipperflyingboats.com/
Flying Boats have mostly been forgotten by the world and I'd love to get into the cockpit of one of these.

Here's another request for a flying boat: http://forum.ysfhq.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=639 It's the only other one that I could find.

I have also been unable to find anything but an extremely low detail U-2 model (Flight_Hanger). I'm kind of surprised about that, and thought that there would have been slightly more interest in spy planes.

Any tips to find a better detailed one, or some one willing to make a nicer model would be greatly appreciated.

Well, Gunny's request was completed by Iceman here. I'm pretty sure there are others, but I can't remember the names of the pack.

Thanks! I couldn't even find if it had been completed. I'll enjoy a few hours of flight time on this one.

Flying boats have definitely taken a back seat here in Ys land as most modders go for the flash and dash kind of planes.
There used to be a historical pack that had a number of WWII flying boats like the PBY and Shorts Sunderland but the Junkyard is offline these days and they where not of vary good quality in the first place.
But here are a few that are available now.
The first and I think the best is Icemans Hu-16 Albatross that I think you already have.
G21a Goose private the Jrf-5 JMSDF @ cep pack.
2Siki-H2k2 flying boat WWII @ Oranleed he also has a number of float fighters from that period.
US1a JMSDF flying boat similar to the Martin @ 2ch
All of them can be found by using the YS flight finder.
Pretty much the only spy plane that any one mods here is the Sr-71 there must be seven different mods of that.
I do recall seeing a well detailed U-2 but I cant remember who did it.

this may sound silly but an issue wth flying boats is they dont work on YS.

anyway, many "spyplanes" are recon variants of aircraft, which there are a few.

mind you... http://forum.ysfhq.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1243

Actually Phoenix they do work !,there is a goose seaplane which would work the same way,all you have to do is animate the wheels (eg the Bombay door key ) coming up and disable the actual gears !

Sea planes will work quite nicely if the scenery is prepared for it.
Make a water area equip it with an rw region and rw indicators or lights.
My Kodiak scenery has a couple sea plane bases. And then there is no reason to switch the gear actuation to bomb bay.

Gunny thanks for mentioning the kodiak map for working with these. Do you know of any others that work? If not, how could I modify one of the stock maps to allow for a water landing?

PMNV hawaii should work for you. It is completely paved.

Also to answer your other question, all you have to do is make the map one giant runway. To do this, download the current stable version of scenery editor, available here. Open the program and choose the scenery you want to edit. Once that is done, click edit->insert->rectangular region. A small box should pop up. Then, select 1 in the menus list, which should be runway. Create a runway by moving the small green box around and hitting enter to create a rectangle. Hit the space bar to finalize the runway. Afterward, you should be done. Just save and it should be ready to go.

Decaff although inserting a water area is not strictly necessary.
(edit-insert-motion path\pick box-water area-check box-loop-check.
Green manual co-ordinate cursor for picking the area.)
It does create a nice water column when you crash ;)
All you really need to do is to insert-rectangular region-runway where ever you want it on the water.I would suggest a size of about 40m+/- wide by 3000m +/- long.
But the tricky part is it will be invisible it will blend in to the color of the water in the game.So you will need to find a way to distinguish between the water and the runway.I would suggest runway lights for this purpose.
map-insert element-choose runway lights\now on the runway region with co-ordinate cursor pick 1st long corner enter then longitudinally to the next corner enter than to the last corner enter space bar to set.
The reason I use the runway lights is that when flying in the daylight the light are hidden until you choose them to be on thru Ctrl-in game menu-L-show runway lights during the day enter.
Now keep in mind that all of the commands for scenery editor I site here are vary simplified for brevity sake but should suffice just to get you started.
Just keep in mind that if you make a whole scenery a runway the challange of the game is reduce by 30% or more if you can land on any flat surface wheres the fun in that?Have fun.
