The Philippine Islands

Post by decaff_42 » Sat Jan 14, 2012 8:12 pm

This is for a request by Hawkstar: http://ysfhq.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2864
I'm posting this to:
1) give people a heads up that this map is under construction and
2) INVITE PEOPLE TO HELP!!! :D

Image

I found a great selection of topographic maps done by the US Army in 1954 which can easily be turned into YSF maps. All of the measurements are in meters, making it easy to input, and the grid lines are conveniently 10km apart.

If anyone wants to help make one of these sections, pick one from here: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/philippines/
The one above is section ND 51-14 (Romblon).

If you look at the index map, you can get an idea of how the section would go together, and how easy it would be to assemble them.
Simply make a base polygon of the deep water color that covers the entire section of the map you are working on, and then build away. The base polygon helps whoever assembles the final map align all the parts. Some of the section have the lat. and long. lines angled, but for this project, ignore the angle and treat them as if they were both horizontal and vertical.

Here's the color palate that you can load, and the RGB #s for each of the colors: http://www.mediafire.com/?2i85c678myyk7x2

Here's some information about airports in the Philippines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ai ... hilippines

If you have any suggestions, or ideas, I'd love to hear them. If you wish to help out, post the name of the section you want to do so that no one does a repeat! :D I'll add it to the hidden section bellow and place your name in the hallowed Modder's list

You could show your thanks by making a section or two...Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. :D

It's be the prefect place to get started because it doesn't have to be that complex, and I'd be willing to answer any questions. :)

decaff, join the Modding Team and toss the base map into a Dropbox folder. I'll add some to it from there.

D: I thought there was some pretty good awareness of the modding team. Guess I'll have to make it global again.

It's free, it's just suggested you pay, and a box pops up whenever you start it. No limitation, though.

Looking good Waspe! Are you using the maps as reference bmps? I was having a bit of trouble getting them set right and as a result I'm working from a printed copy.

Manila's international airport, for viewing pleasure and reference. You can use stock terminal buildings for the terminals.

Yeah, I set the grid spacing to 30km and stretched the image out until the 30KM scale bar on the bottom was roughly equal.

When you did that did you get a lot of pixilation when you went in close for details? I've tried saving the .jpeg as a .bmp and .png and both had problems with the resolution. Is there a resolution max for bmp and png files? I thought i read somewhere that 600 dpi was the most you could get out of those.
