Project Atlas

Post by VNAF ONE » Wed May 11, 2011 2:09 am

Welcome to Project Atlas

The activity of scenery editing and map creation has gone down to almost zero. However we'd like you all, as members of the community, to know that new maps are not done. Many wouldn't stick around YS when there's no new maps to fly on. We also realize that the VA industry is suffering substantially due to the lack of maps adequate for their intermediate and long distance operations. Many of this community in particular reside in the United States or Western Hemisphere of the world yet have no maps to cover the places they've been or where they live.

These are just some of the reasons why I am launching Project Atlas. This project is not just the work of my own, but a culmination of the work from a gathered and ever expanding team of YS Scenery Creators. Project Atlas aims at covering certain regions of the globe with the work of multiple creators instead of just one. Thus decreasing the time and workload of production and popping out more maps in less time. Also the efficiency becomes greater when multiple knowledgeable persons can peer edit and critique the work before it is released, giving the community more detailed and clean maps. We will navigate the earth searching for new places to create and are inspired by that of which members of this forum live.

Project Atlas is currently focusing on the Eastern United States. We want to provide efficient but detailed recreations of the earth's regions. This means that airports will be of a slightly higher value than stock airports but not at the level of detail where one airport kills 15fps. We hope that this will inspire our once great YS ATC and VA programs back into life and watch new members slither through the skies over familiar country. This will provide an exciting factor to the game and will hopefully be an interesting point to make to your friends when recommending the game.

Attention Team Atlas! The list is below of the region in progress and airports that will be expected to be done in this region. There of course are many more and any member may feel free to add to the list so long as your addition is within this region. Any member may also request their region as a future project. Your region will be added to our waiting list. This project is intended to last as long as it takes and as members and mapmakers depart our community, more will be sure to fill in. The talent will simply continue to grow. There are many tutorials both at YSFHQ and YSPilots.com that will aid any newbie to the glory and joy of mapmaking. Anyone may join Team Atlas by simply requesting to do a part of the project in a response below. Your name will be added to the list.

Let's have fun doing this and make YS Flight history everyone!

Note: Anyone who choses to contribute to the project in any way whatsoever will be entered into Team Atlas. The group is absolutely entirely open to anyone. There will still be a board to be added to the group soon to manage and ensure that the projects go as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

I'll take the entirety of Georgia, and would suggest adding Augusta Regional and Daniel Field.

Wow! I'm actually a bit surprised at the excitement over this one. Thanks to all who are and are willing to participate. This can become a great learning movement in the community with many willing to learn the art of map making just to be a part.

@Waspe414: Thanks so much waspe! That's a big responsibility there. Did you want to do Moody AFB as well because I was only doing it because that's where A-10C East Coast Warthog comes from(see avatar and signature :D ). Airports added. I'd love to see Hartsfield when it's done!

@Kynan: This map will be intermediate detail as I do in many of my map releases showing basically general terrain features and drawing cities and populated areas by roads and a few elevation grids. I do want to keep a lot of detail to a very minimum considering that the size of this map may cause shaking and I don't want everyone's ys trying to draw ground objects as well. This means that the ground objects shown in the map will be the bare minimum such as flight/nav aids, control towers and fuel trucks.

@Gunny: That's good Gunny. I look forward the most to places created from personal experience rather than simply reference. It has an entirely different meaning that way. It's like adding love in the cookies  .

As Waspe has, any suggestions of airports will be added to the list. Can't wait to see this list turn into more green.

Check original post. Since so many of you reside in the United Kingdom, we shall add that to the list. I actually believe that about half the community lives somewhere in Europe. We will think more about the United Kingdom once we get some of the other projects out of the way. Until then, would anybody be willing to give me a scale island to start from? Basically just use google earth and probably get a more detailed coastline around important places and basically just send me the island itself. That would make our jobs so much easier when we get to it. Remember just outline the mainland and if it's really wanted, Ireland too. It may have to consist of many smaller polygons or something to make sure you don't get that weird effect because the polygon's too big.

Speaking of the UK I was gearing up to do some maps in England a short time ago and aquired a bunch of diagrams for airports and RAF fields.
They are the equivilent of our FAA diagrams in pdf form.
If any one is interested I will post them here as zip files.

Oh yeah gunny sounds great. I've always used OS maps but they are not high in the fine detail.

Oh BTW, it has arrived.

The diagram drawing are mostly for the tech. r/w information and overall layout of the field.
contains info on safety equipment of the r/w as well as true orientations.
For the detail there is no better info. than a good sat. image from your favorite site I use Bing me and google just don't get along
As an example KCRW Yeager field as of 2011 FAA diagram shows r/w,s 15-33 have been decommissioned but the sat. photos shows them to be fully active.
Vandel cool enjoy.

Augusta Regional Airport is now done.

I would say use the ICAO codes for VOR and VORDME, and two or three F9 points per state.

East, I can take Moody off your hands as well.

Added and done. I only plan to have F9's at major Class B or C airports. I will try to release this with copies of the region's sectional charts. Also will stock ground objects cause more lag or reduce framerate than elevation grids? I just want to be sure that this map stays around 20 to 30 fps as much as possible.

Will the region/airports be all connected on the same large map, or will they be released as separates?

I'm still lingering on that. Combining multiple regions could cause YS to freakin lose it's mind and go crazy. There is one, low detail map that m3hw made a while back of the midwest states and it had the joystick icon flying all over the screen. In the case that these single regions may do the same, I doubt we will combine regions. Now the airports will all be on the same map. The ones listed above will all show up in one continuous map.

Alright. I had heard of problems of making a "woohoo let's do all of Earth" map, so I was just wondering. Best of luck in this: unfortunately, I can't help, as a lot of the modding tools are Windows-specific.
