[EP2]Flakes Flying Training Adventure!

Post by Flake » Thu Oct 25, 2012 1:45 am

Hi Folks.

I can now legitimately say I am student pilot, with today being my first official loggable flight hour as a student pilot.

I had a great flight over the cessnock training area, where we pretty much just fiddled with the aircraft controls for the most of it. we played a game where Michael, my instructor, would wind the trim wheel in some direction, while I had my eyes closed, then he got me to figure out the trim and fix it.

Real cakewalk of a day and I was getting a real good feel for the aircraft once we got into it.

My next lesson is next thursday morning (same time), which is straight and level flight. We'll probaby do straight and level and different speeds, transitions between speeds, etc.

I hope I can go solo by 15 hours. I'll keep you posted (and perhaps try and nab some cool pics!)

Take Care.

- Flakey-San.

I've been deemed medically unsuitable becuase I am underweight.

I don't think I'm going to do that again.

I plan on going commercial with command instrument and instructor ratings.

You're only 21in a couple of days; I say you should at least give it one more shot - FLTLT Atkinson; Hornet demonstrator pilot, had to apply something like 3 times before he got in.

If it really is just a weight issue; you have the ability to change that. Take charge of your life and don't allow yourself to face later regret.

You don't think I've poured hundreds of dollars into it already?

I want to fly commercial now anyway, as a military life doesn't really suit for the fiance and I.

If I'm still happy with the outcome, heh. 100 hornets in australia. 30 million ish citizens. uh.... yeah... Not really realistic.

Fair enough; just don't fly for Skytrans - they're a decent company, but how their planes keep in the air I have no idea - their Dash 8's are nearly always covered in flaking paint, burn marks, oil splashed across engines, tail protectors half torn, etc. Then again, I suppose that they do have a decent record, and D8 200's are rugged planes, and you've gotta start somewhere.

Q-link is a strange one; their Q400's always look clean, paint and oil, etc, but they're always grounding themselves due to engine issues, broken nav lights, etc.

Regional Express is decent, but their SAAB 340's are needy aircraft, so at least locally, they're not very well liked - whereas a Skytrans Dash 8 just lands and gets unloaded, a REX SAAB 340 requires ground power, an air conditioning cart (maybe not in NSW though), their drinks need to be stored in airport fridges, and they have silly policy & procedures - we cannot approach their plane until their props have completely stopped, but we're also required to walk behind running engines / props, ducking under 1400C jet exhausts, in order to disconnect the ground power.

Alas, those are only local minor airlines. If you can get straight to jets on some kind of scholarship, go for that of course, but otherwise...

I don't know what your budget is, but my best recommendation is ATP for your Commercial Licence. I have heard from many people who of gone there and praised it. I hope to have the chance to go there as well.

They will give you a automatic CFI job once you graduate, so you can get your hours up. They have contracts with several airlines for pilot hiring straight from ATP. And, you can go to a University (Embry-Riddle) while taking ATP so you can have a degree to look good on your resume (And if a disaster does happen, something to fall back on). I suggest getting something besides aviation related, yet in your interest and something technical.

Flakes Flying Training Adventure
Episode 2: Straight And Level.

Today We focused on straight and level flight at variable speeds. Anywhere from 75 to 105 knots really.

I did the full flight today, take-off and all, and landing in a strong crosswind (first landing/takeoff! :D)

We focused on "PAST" being Power, Attitude, Speed, Trim to correct the aircraft for straight and level flight. We also learned a lot about moments and lift/drag and other forces.

Flight forcused on maintaining speed and altitude and heading, and then accurate transitions between them.

I also am starting to learn the paperwork side of things, now I am able to do the weight and balance! :D

Next fortnight will be lesson #3: Climbs and descents.
