Re: Aircraft you spotted today
Yes this is because of the current operations in Libya, and the Malta International Airport is the closest airport. Nope none of them were armed as the HS125 was on a VIP flight, and the Lynx transported the VIPs to the HMS Ocean. The French Puma was here probably for crew change for the Charles de Gaulle. And the French Atlantique, which landed on an emergency, is used for reconnaissance and the CN235 was equipped with ground crew.Crazypilot wrote:Planes from different armies at the same place? Were they fully armed?
Also today the HMS Ocean arrived at the Valletta Grand Harbour today, it had 3 x Lynx and 2 x Sea Kings on deck.
Apart from the military activity, today I saw a Eurocopter AS-355N, an Aerospatiale SA-365C-3 Dauphin 2 (in Israeli Air Force camouflage), a Bell UH-1, and a HiFly A310. All of these are being used for Brad Pitt's movie "World War Z" which is currently being filmed in Malta.

Re: Aircraft you spotted today
They reported on the atc frequency of course. They couldn't refuel because the fuel probe of the first Mirage broke while trying to refuel. see the pics belowCrazypilot wrote:How did you know they were short on fuel?
Mirage 2000N
Mirage 2000D
Notice that the Mirage 2000N has the tip bit of the fuel probe missing. This has already happened in May where 2 x FAF Mirage 2000-5F landed here for the same reason. http://jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=7128771&nseq=9

Re: Aircraft you spotted today
2 C-130 Hercules doing low maneuvers and short field landing on the Atterbury airstrip.
1 Blackhawk doing circle and recovery maneuvers over the base Thursday.
2 A-10C Warthogs actually LIVE FIRING on a target range at Camp Atterbury. I heard the sound of the GAU-8 Avenger from 3 miles away and it caught my attention as I later heard the sounds of rockets and AGM's. These Warthogs were most likely out of Ft. Wayne's ANG unit. This is believably the highlight of anything I saw this week. Besides what's next that is.
6 UH-60 Blackhawks today. I flew in the lead bird today as the graduation of my week-long camp. I sat on the middle row facing the cockpit to the aircraft's far port side. We flew treetop and 10 feet off the ground going even down to 5 feet at some points. We flew through the base's compounds and ranges as part of our flight course. Maximum altitude was about 500 feet. Best ride of my life.
