I suppose you are referring to the F-102, as the XF-92 was never more than a research plane.

that's why I said operational. Since I know you guys take issue with me not being perfectly clear and every question can be contested because of my wording or source or the dispute between two countries

Bombcat's total is now 3

Question 24: Production of this RAF aircraft began in 1968, however it was not operational until 1980. It is a variable sweep wing aircraft created as part of a joint effort by the UK, West Germany, and Italy who wanted a low level supersonic aircraft. What is it?

Yet again, its time for me to head to work. I will most likely award points/give the next question tonight.

Panavia Tornado? I don't think production started that early in 1968 though.

Development of the aircraft started in 1968, that's when pen was put to paper so to speak. MRCA project, it wasn't until 1970 that the design was down to two designs a single seat Panavia 100 which West Germany initially preferred, and the twin seat Panavia 200 which the RAF preferred. The 200 would become the Tornado. It was briefly called the Panavia Panther, before the British said that Tornado sounded cooler. But, the first batch of aircraft did not hit the work shops until July 1976. The Soviets where very scared of the aircraft high speed and low level capability and put a huge effort into getting hold of information about it. At the same time the Tornado GR1 was on the production line, the British started development for the Tornado ADV or Tornado F2 (later F3) in complete secret, even with the other Panavia partners. There where even building parts for the ADV with out knowing what they where for. After all, the F3 is almost a completely different aircraft by design and looks.
