Discussion for a 238th Marine Corps birtday ball and airsow.

Post by Gunny » Sat Nov 10, 2012 10:24 pm

Give me some feedback on the idea of the subject.
Since I have not had any experience at creating or organizing an air show I am going to need all the help and ideas I can get.
I am going to ask Scarecrow if I may reuse the Keneyoe MCAS that was created for the independence day air show back in 2010.
And will need a server to put it on and I figure a years lead time will be more than enough time.
The theme obviously will be Marine Corps aviation from its inception to the present. The pre WWI stuff to WWII might be a little thin but after that there is a plethora of Marine stuff to choose from that is already made. And who knows maybe some of our repainters will feel froggy.
I am going to have to invite the Navy of course there carrier services will be required and if we are vary lucky the BA might decide to join us even if just for static display.
So tell me what you think and give with the ideas but just remember this is not the invasion of Iwo just an air show a vary good one if I can help it.But I will not put the Marine Corps reputation on the line even if it is only a simulation.

This is cool Gunny. I cannot mod, so maybe I could do a flyover at the end of the National Anthem, with a couple other people.

Being able to mod is not a requirement to attend or participate in any way.And I hope I did not give that impression. The only requirement is that you fly a marine Corps or Navy aircraft. But preferably Marine corps. And btw directly after the National anthem will follow the Marine Corps anthem.I envision a missing man formation( F/A 18s) during the opening ceremony's.

A missing man after the National Anthem should be a part of every air show.

Perhaps we could also do something like this:
Image

Have an "intercept".
I didn't realize before I looked that Marine aviators also intercepted those Ruskie Bears.
I will definatly have This Guy done by then.

We could trail some patriotic colored smoke as well.

That is true decaff but sometime it is necessary to state the obvious. And I believe that Ysmajor has a f4 in those colors as well as a few other USMC paints. But the picture is truly an iconic image of the cold war period. And even Ivan likes a good air show.

Just took another look at the map, and I think we should put in a few carriers (1 wwII era, a heli/harrier carrier) as well. Marine Aviation without a carrier is a bunch of expensive metal on the bottom of the ocean.

They would need to be very close to shore

I'm an Air Force brat myself but I'm in. A year will give me plenty time to practice some sort of demo. Maybe a WW2 one.

decaff there should be one stationed right off shore already less than a mile. And as for the helo carrier thats just as important to the Corps history as the halls of Montezuma.I will ask if we can borrow one from the 171st ground pack.Vertical envelopment has a huge roll in the Corps and should definitely be included.Calling all helo jocks. To bad we can't simulate some helo-casting of Recon teams.Sea knights and Sea stallions should be there as well as super cobras and hueys for old times sake.

If there is going to be a Bear intercept, then I really want to fly the Tu-95.

Not to make you do too much work Gunny,
but would you consider adding a new airfield
to that area for that event? I'd kind'a like to
see Bellows Field recreated for its contribution
to the WW2 ara's military population.
The Marines did use it at some point.
What do you think?

We haven't done our Independence Day show yet this year. It's been a pretty busy time lately for our production people.

But as winter rolls around, lets make this happen. Complete with Marine aircraft, anything and everything patriotic, and fireworks. Sure, many of our members may not be from the U.S., but we can tailor some things to make things to make things work. I think this is a great idea, as 2012 being the Centennial of Marine Corps Aviation.

Let me know via PM your ideas. Or here rather, that goes for everyone. Already taking several off this thread.

Well, I probably wouldn't have the Tu-95 Bear ready for anything this year, but we could sub in the Tu-22m3 Backfire I'm working on modifying. Not quite the iconic image as the Bear, but still a mainstay of the soviet force.

Won't get all gushy here but thanks Scarecrow from the bottom of my Marine Corps green slightly used heart :)
I have started to modify your MCAS by reducing the foot print of the original to further reduce lag and exchanging ground objects for elevation grids for buildings and of course I will make sure you get to approve any changes I make well in advance of the show.

I can't believe I never saw this before. You have my FULL support Gunny. I would love to see this happen as much as you would. If the occasion permits, I would even like to modify the K-Bay map with the appropriate carriers and such. The same ground pack that brings us the carrier in the current map also has an LHD to use. If you guys would like, I could work on that map and leave you guys to organize the Jarhead show we're gonna have. I would also like to pull off a Harrier demo in the midst of it too. If not that, I could do some things in a Blue Angel (or Fat Albert which is a Marine aircraft) to better represent both. I just have way too many ideas right now. I'm excited about this here!

I'd be interested in doing Fat Albert and some combat takeoffs and landings if you'd do something with in a Blue Angels plane doing an escort thru 'hostile' airspace. I saw a F.A. stand-in C-130 doing those and damn, is the C-130 impressive. :o

Also perhaps whipping up a fireworks barge to start and end the show with would be fun. Make the initial flare velocity like 200m/s

VNAF all offers of help are welcome by me and I believe Scarecrow as well.If you wish to work on K-bay feel free to do so.But be advised to run your changes by Scarecrow since it is his modifications we will be altering. Also a Harrier demo is kind of required in a Marine Corps air show and since the Corps has started an active F-35 squadron we should include the latest and greatest?Just no VTOL it melts the tarmac. ;)

@decaff with Jato assist I presume.I haven't got anything yet about a Blue Angels demo but we have a year to go so who knows and did you know that TF-58 has two Marine refueling 130s in his stable?

It wasn't with jato assist, it was pure C-130 POWAR!!!
I don't know if YSF can do afterburners (for JATO) on a propeller plane.

I know of a couple of KC-130s, wasn't sure what pack they were from. The ones I've got are from south america. I forget the country.

the BA's wouldn't have to do a full six ship formation. Doesn't have to be BA at all. could be a normal F-18 doing a solo escort or a two ship formation that would escort then do a performance. Of course we will have to have both hornets and SUPER hornets at this show. Maybe Airbourne will be done with his model by then. ;)

There is a Jato assist Fat Albert made by Luckybeergod years ago who is also the author of a vary good quality Blue Angels F/A 18 numbered 1-7.I may even have them in my stored collection.I will have to look for them.
