Hi there! Recently two headlines have dominated the news, the first one being President Obama's use of the N-word in an interview with Marc Maron and the second being the controversy of the Confederate flag flying outside the S.C. state capitol. So, what are your views on these? :?:

Haven't even heard about the first one, as far as the flag goes . . . wait, that doesn't matter here. We don't talk politics (mostly because we all know none of us know what we're talking about).

Nothing political here. He said that saying the word is rude. That is true.
I expressed my opinion of the flag as a Thought of the Day, but to summarize, the flag is a memorial to those who fought and died in a war started by a bunch of politicians over politics.

Which is why we don't talk about politics around here: So nobody gets into a fight.

And for the record, I have 18 undergraduate hours in political science and law, a Masters Degree in history education, and I'm a former adjunct professor of history at a state university. I am fully qualified to say that when it comes to politics, even the politicians don't know what they are talking about. How can we do any better?

Typically, I try to stay out of stuff like this, but this picture would more or less sum up my views on the matter. Primarily the last part.

I'm sorry Copperhead. Morgan Freeman did not say that. Racism, especially institutional racism does not go away because we stop talking about it. That's like saying you can cure cancer if you stopped thinking about the pain and sickness it brought you.

Uhm, I guess this could be faked?

Of course if we stop talking about it, it won't entirely stop, but the media broadcasting about racial injustice every time the slightest indecent occurs, only feeds the fire.

There is a very huge defined completely visible and obvious line between discussing racial issues and simply talking about racism.

they say that the only guy who understood why people are racist died laughing before he could explain it to the rest of the world!

i personally dont understand racist people! aren´t we all humans after all? Im white, very white...but i dont care what colour skin a guy sitting next to me has... all i care is about their personality!

LET´S MAKE A CHANGE! LET´S STOP THIS MADDNESS!

the bible says: "judge not, unless ye be judge first."

I had a very funny experience with the issue of racism. I was subbing for a PE teacher in the gym. The kids had organized themselves so all the minorities were on one team and the other team was all white kids. I got nervous and said, "This is wrong. We can't segregate!" The kids laughed at me and thought the whole issue was a joke because they are all friends and racism doesn't apply to their lifestyles. This generation of children in the US (and many other nations) are growing up in the most racially-integrated society since before the people of Babylon built their tower. If they experience racism during their life, it will be from us adults who are stuck in the social debates of our childhoods. If everybody over 30 left the kids alone on the issue of race, I have no doubt that racism would be dead within their lifetimes.

MY Asian/Black/Whatever friends have shown more care for me in my life then any of my white "friends". That's a fact.

Racism is an institutionalised construct. Taught by parents and peers for no good reason, just narrow minded ignorance.

There. Are we done discussing this now? Racists and Conservatives will always be racists and conservatives, and raise their bratty bastard children to do the same. That's life. You can't educate the ignorant. The best you can do is encourage the ignorant to educate themselves and even that is a big ask.
I am an accountant working full-time (and some). I'm not here as often as I would like to be. Send a message if you need me. There are a few people in the community who can get in contact with me urgently if you need - don't be afraid to ask. I just don't check here as frequently as I used to. Sorry!
