Post by usp2333 » Mon Nov 21, 2011 6:24 pm

This is my second attempt to make a MH-68 /A-109 Coastguard helicopter.
the first attempt i used a box main frame and tried to make it circle. a bit of a fail. this time im using a circle frame. tell me what you think.

Honestly the body looks a little bit TOO round. Try squaring it a little. Work off a 3 view!

A good start, but can I request that you make one topic for all your work? Rather than having a new topic for every model you are working on? Most modders have just one topic that is theirs, they use their topic to show off all their work. Keeps the place tidy and your fans have a one stop shop for all of your work.

What I like to do is import a 3-view, scale it approximately right, then trace off the top, front, and side views. If you stick them together in a + shape, you get a pretty good base to build from. (I do this primarily because I can't figure out the advanced SketchUp tools...)

Wikipedia sort of supplies:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... O_A109.png

Google, however, does. This one you may have to save as a .png to import to SketchUp:
http://www.the-blueprints.com/blueprint ... -aw109.gif

By the way, those were from Googling "MH-68", getting the Wiki for the AW109, Googling "AW109" and going to Images. Google is your friend (for the most part).

Oh shush, it's a work in progress. Once you finish the full aircraft in rough, go back with the Move tool and move the line ends (vertices) around until it is a little more curved. (For example, pulling the center line of the cockpit a touch more forward, the sides back a little.) Take a look at images from angles, and try to match them as best you can. Don't worry if it looks angular or blocky. As long as you have the form down, YS's vertex rounding will blend it. (If you tell it to via Gepoly.)

Yeah, I've seen a lot of the Work's-In-Progress, and this one looks just
about the way it should at this point in its creation. Although, to my [sic]
untrained eye, it looks like its a little smaller than it should be (compared
to the representative human form included in the image). Not being familiar
with that software's display properties though, I could simply be uninformed.

He'll have to rescale it on export anyways, so it's no big deal. ;)

That's looking pretty decent for a first try usp.

Looks pretty good. Make sure you wrap the front windshield around to the side like in the pictures. I'd also suggest cutting the other windows in SketchUp, maybe even the doors (if you want them to move).

Once you've finished the model in SketchUp, paint the whole body one colour, the windows another, and any moving parts another (for example, body white, windows red, main rotor purple, and tail rotor green). Also paint the INSIDE of the model, every surface (windows, doors, inside the rotors, etc.), a totally different colour (say pink). (This inside colour is because SketchUp uses two polygons for every visible one, meaning you can have a different colour on each side. This looks bad when exported, though, and doubles filesize.) That makes it really easy to split what you want and don't want from what needs to be animated.

That is amazing!

I'm easily impressed, but making realistic models from scratch is one thing I've never even tried.

And it is quite difficult, Patrick. I've already tried some times with my designs, and the only one that seems that is going the right way is my AIA-1. I posted pics in my WIP thread, if you want to see it.
