How do you guys make Taxiways?

Post by Barr » Sat Apr 05, 2014 8:47 pm

Just curious how do you guys make taxiways or have any secret tools that help you make perfect taxiways.

Usually on single runway airports I'll import a refrence bitmap and trace a thick line over it. On larger complex maps I'll use the polygon feature...

I always use thick lines for runways and taxiways much easier to size and manipulate angles and rectangles for parking when possible.I try to minimize the use of polygons when ever possible and keep them as small as feasible.

I use thicklines for pretty much everything that is straight-roads, runways, taxiways, taxiway centerlines, runway edge markers etc. The thickline has become my friend when making a new map or editing an existing one. Much faster than the rectangle/polygon method and much less error-prone.

Yep if it takes 100 points to make a radius like for a taxiway line. But for center runway lines there is a better and faster way that unfortunately eludes me at the moment.I would strongly suggest that you find and watch decaffs video tutorials for scenery editor here http://forum.ysfhq.com/viewtopic.php?f=147&t=4731

center runway lines can be done with the centerline option. Thought I had a YT video about it but I don't. That link gunny posted has info about how to do it, just look at the table of contents for "Centerline" or something to that effect.

For curves I try and decide on polygon detail...

5 degrees is good enough for me, so one point every 5 degrees of curve.

Other artists will be more detailed and go for every 3-2 even, some people go for 10 (ugly and blocky)

It's a judgement call really. how detailed do you want the curve?

Do you then like, grab a calculator and calculate the individual points per 5 degrees? I could imagine doing that for myself :P (though I'd rather use a list, as I have a graphing calculator...)

No Ive watched his videos.... I have also downloaded his intersection, curve and turn thingamajig....

Heh so Im guessing for a highly detailed airport you just have sit back and. Abuse the left mouse button and enter key...

I just thought there was a tool that would lets us import something like an image and convert it into A polygon. The airplane modelers seem to have all the cool knick knacks.

Hey but at least Decaffs elevation grid tool is really helpful...

There is it is import reference. But it still will not draw it for you or do any other bits of the work necessary to make a map. That part is called talent and you have to work at it.

Only when I'm working on re-usable parts, but otherwise I just look and guess. drag, place... nope that's not it, delete, place... nope... again, AH THATS IT.
