If you're reading this post, that means you've stumbled across the page for the best squadron ever created in the history of YSFlight - the CVW-171. We are almost 5 years old, with only the best pilots able to claim actual membership in our squadron. All of our members are well known in the YSFlight community, and all of our members excel at blowing shit up and shooting shit down.Only one out of every 15 applicants is selected for the squadron. Each member goes through rigorous training and conditioning before being able to join the squad. If you think it's too much, look at another squad page, because we only take the best. But if you think you can do it, keep reading...

ABOUT THE SQUADRON

History

The 171st Flight Squadron started in 2006, originally as a rival to the then-famous Red Pheonix Fighter Squad, also known ask the RPFS. Soon after it's conception, the 171st dropped it's original motive and, under the command of Iceman, grew rapidly to 30 pilots strong in a few months. Shortly after, the 171st Flight Squadron changed itself to the VFA-171, consisting of 2 sub squadrons, the VF-171 and the VA-171. A year later, that was also changed, into the current CVW-171. In 2008, Iceman gave the CO position up to Bombcat, and ever since then we have been known as the best online YSFlight squadron to ever grace the skies.

Our Subsquadrons

VFA-42 Bloodhounds

Image

The VFA-42 Bloodhounds is the CVW-171's elite full multirole squadron, specializing in intercepting large aircraft and sniping fighters, bombers, and AAA alike. Their flagship bird is the venerable F-4S Phantom, loaded with 3 GPU-5/A gunpod units and MERs to get the job done quick.

CO:...

VFA-131 Flathattas

Image

The VFA-131 is the CVW-171's premier air superiority squadron, comprised of only the best cut of dogfighters from the VT-171. Only very few pilots are allowed to join the VFA-131, and their primary role is to secure any airspace at any time against almost any enemy. Their flagship is the F-8 Crusader, armed with 4 cannons to carve enemy aircraft in half upon contact.

CO: Drahon

VFA-201 Steel Ninjas

Image

The VFA-201 is the CVW-171's night fighter squadron. Equaling in skill to the VFA-131, the VFA-201 is also here to take air superiority of any airspace in night conditions, using their camoflouage scheme to hide in the darkness and strike unsuspecting enemies before they have a chance to do any damage. Their flagship aircraft is the Rafale M, fast, light and armed with a faster firing gun to quickly kill enemies.

CO: USE

VFA-165 Black Aces

Image

The VFA-165 Black Aces are the heavy hitters of the CVW-171, and is the only squadron that has been assigned the A-6 Intruder in the strike role as the flagship. The VFA-165 can do any bombing job you give them, including interdictions, runway strikes, SEAD, disabling airbases, and much more. Their flagship is the A-6F, which can lug along 36 500lb Bombs to lay waste to anything it flies over.

CO: Bombcat

VFA-82 Maulers

Image

The VFA-82 Maulers are the squadron's SAM and AAA killers - they fly in the SEAD and fighter escort roles. They are a collective of the best SAM and AAA killers in the squadron, and are trained to fly in, quickly wreck any defense network the target area, and leave as quickly as they came with fighters watching their back. Their flagship, the F/A-18C, is the perfect balance of stability and agility to fly low and fast and shoot small targets with it's centerline cannon.

CO: Iceman

VFA-72 Stingers

Image

The VFA-72 is the CVW-171's ship-hunting and destroyer-killing squadron. Anything that sails that is not on a friendly IFF will be shot up with their flagship bird, the Su-25. Armed with the tank killing gun and able to hahul along 109 rockets, the VFA-72 will clear any destroyer picket with ease and grace and still look badass after.

CO: Vandal

VMFA-125 Warlords

Image

The VMFA-125 is the Marine force of the CVW-171, operating from the LHA-35. Their strike force consists of their flagship F-35B, able to operate VTOL from small surfaces to rearm and refuel quickly, as well as their AH-1Z and Osprey attack choppers to deliver the Marine units into enemy territory and cover them with surpressing fire if needed.

THE MEMBERSHIP PROCESS

The membership process to become a CVW-171 member is long and tedious, but after the records are finished and the training is complete, CVW-171 members are truly the most respected members of YSFHQ because of their dedication to the game and loyalty to the squadron - it is the members that truly keep the CVW-171 alive.

Applying to the Squadron

Are you considering becoming a member? If so, you will need to apply first. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the link on the bottom to go to our forum, and follow the instructions on our "Applications" sub-forum to post your own application. Apps usually take 2-7 days to process. If you are accepted, you will be contacted by a CVW-171 Recruitment Officer or the CO or XO themselves.

Training with the VT-171

Training is one of the longest parts of your membership process - this part can easily last over six months to a year - so that we weed out those who are not worthy. You will don the [VT-171] tag in front of your name online to signify that you are enrolled with the Fixed Wing Training 171 squadron, fly 10 lessons of tutored training with a current full member of the CVW-171, and you will be graduated only if the CO and XO both agree that you possess the know-how and the mentality to be a full fledged CVW-171 pilot.

Graduation

Graduation out of the VT-171 is the final stage of your training and membership. You will take two tests, and the COs will see if you are ready or not to join the best squadron in the game. Firstly, you will need to be able to take on the trainer in a dogfight and last 3 minutes - 5 times. Next, you need to clear Airstrike_Challenge in under 7 minutes with no deaths. If these two tests are cleared, and your ability is up to par, you will be accepted, and your membership will be complete.

a) How long is each training session?
b) Is clearing Airstrike Challenge even doable?

I can usually float like 30-45 minutes at a time. Would that work?

Honestly? It really depends. If you're interested in joining, focus more on trying to get accepted.

I was just asking so I could get an idea of whether or not I should apply.

Unless Iceman, Bombcat, or any other senior member loves you a lot, the chances of you getting accepted are very low. Considering we are not recruiting due to us wanting to have competition from other squadrons, but don't feel discouraged, if you REALLY feel the CVW-171 is for you, apply.

With a little more experience in ys you will see that pretty much the only thing that is any threat in terms stock ys stuff is udaloys. Anyways, if you're interested you apply, and if you get in this stuff becomes relevant.

And as sven said, we are not accepting much anyone right now. We're by far the biggest and it's not fair to other squads that we pick up many of the best possible recruits.

This will sound stupid, but by clear Airstrike Challenge do you mean:
A:Clear opposing forces (armed, like SAMs)
OR
B: Clear all.

There's an enemy base on a separate IFF (5?), it's small enough to destroy within the allotted time, but difficult enough to present a challenge to the graduating members. Taking out the entire map would be much more difficult because of the IFF being the same, and wouldn't be as much of a challenge because they won't shoot back, even if there isn't a time limit. But both are feasible.

It's just one small base right next to the 171st carrier, the only enemy base there. It's perfect for training, with a mix of sams, aaa, tanks, buildings, ships, etc. Theres no need to worry about time or getting there in general unless you constantly crash.

Compared to taking out all of the the air defences of the default map, how hard is it?

I think I used a CVW-171st A-6.

The a-6 is far too slow to make the test within the allotted time. Again, I don't see why people are worrying about this sort of stuff, the primary concern ought to be to impress bombcat, iceman and sentinel sufficiently to get in.

We were not concerned, just unsure about which part was meant. We understood the rest (hopefully).
