90's style pixelated ground tile_highly coarse looks.
Kinda minecrafty upon closer inspection
256x256 pixels/74.1kb.
NO framerate lagging experienced when tested.
tested on 3 different versions of YSFLIGHT for Windows, 20110207, 20181124, 20150406.
Not tested under linux!!!.
Ground is quite visible when landing so visual approaches are a bit easier.
Instructions included on readme file.
File redistribution allowed, specially if you host the file for use on a YSFLIGHT server.
EDIT: Screens are from the 20110207 version (Heathrow stock map).
Re: 90's style pixelated ground tile_highly coarse looks.
I really like how this looks on the 171st stock maps. Great mod!

Re: 90's style pixelated ground tile_highly coarse looks.
A 1024x1024 one would be sweet if our hardware and YSFS can take it Was planning to upload hi-res ground tiles as soon as possible anyways so I hope I may have some for uploading sometime soon.Thomascook221 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 6:57 am Not a request though, but i wonder how 512x512 or maybe 1024x1024 will be looked like.
Resizing the tile didn't yield as good quality results as I had expected, guess making a new 1024x1024 tile from scratch should work better.
Preview: Test tile 1024x1024. EDIT: Tried again, turned more detailed this time but lost overall contrast, turned out well enough though. >>> tiled the original n-times on a resized canvas and recomposited.
You may edit or combine these tiles as you see fit. repaint and modification allowed in all cases as well as redistribution.
Here: 1024X1024 tile "B" EDIT:

More info on my tiling mishaps
I paint them on screen by hand ( by mouse don't have a drawing tablet ) well it's really not all that difficult to make a seamless terrain tile, there's even automated procedural software out there to do just that, but the main difficulty for me when making tiles is something UGLY I call the "knitted effect" which plagued most of the tiles I tried to do and caused by pattern repeating itself.
One way I found to avoid "knitting" is to find contrast balance of highlights and shadows, too much contrast="Knitting", not enough contrast=terrain barely or not visible, so it's trial and error, also found complexity helps; the smaller the patterns on your image the better. Also process them for seamless tiling.

Re: 90's style pixelated ground tile_highly coarse looks.
Thanks comrade!!!.. Perhaps the "sweet spot" for performance taking into account possible variations in user hardware and YSFLIGHT versions would be a 64x64pixels/128x128pixels range, 64x64 being the one where you retain a somewhat acceptable "3D" terrain illusion with less performance impact.Thomascook221 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 1:21 pm You did a good job right there, actually 512x512 already affect performance a bit on my end, but not really significant for me. But yeah, i believe 1024x1024 will affect the fps heavily, can't wait to test the 1024x1024 .

As for the 1024x1024 ones I guess maybe they could still be used for aircraft photography within YSFS if the fps strain is too high. I won't be needing those for my flights, but I've been thinking about making a few and including them on a pack along with the other smaller resolution tiles anyways, just in case someone requires them. Most are not ready yet (need more work) but will post as soon as possible including 2 fantasy tiles I got in mind; lego brick and tron. (In packs instead of one by one so as to not create forum clutter)
The one thing I'd like though is perhaps to have different tiles, at least one for ground another for water and another for paved areas, something like: groundtile.png, watertile.png, pavedtile.png, that should be something interesting to see for me, although I don't know if it's possible to do, I'm not even asking (or requesting)

Did you use sand and grass textures?

Nope... These textures are custom tailored and original made from scratch for YSFLIGHT by me so as to avoid any copyright issues. I do have minecraft installed on my pc but would never use those tex, I just prefer making my own.AviationMAX wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:29 pm "Kinda minecrafty upon closer inspection"
