Place to learn ATC?

Just Wondering if theres a tutorial or scheduled session that teaches ATC? Ive read the manual, but not really sure on how to say it. for example if i were on TS, would I say " Flight HA1090" as

1.Flight "aitch" "a" one zero niner zero
or
2. Hawaiin airways flight one zero niner zero

edit: Im currently watching some vids on youtube. Do you guys here follow the same procedures as in real life ATC?

Easiest way to learn is to go off military / NATO conventions. Refer to the image of the table on the right of this page.

It would be example #2 to keep it simple my friend.There are other ways but #2 is the simplest at this point. ;)

Listen to DFW Tower (under Class B airports), or Austin tower (under Class C), and some of those approach frequencies (like JFK approach) would also be good. Clearest reception out there plus you'll get a whole variety of ATC jargon to listen to. You don't have to get it all technically correct (we're not that strict about it here so no worries if you don't say something correctly).

Other than that I would just do a Google search on air traffic control or air traffic communication. For YSFS purposes it's like Gunny said, simple is good. Also it doesn't hurt to have some knowledge about basic stuff like flight levels, runway numbers and magnetic compass headings etc.

Just a random tip that just came to mind: something the ATC does here is if whenever you have a complicated call-sign or anything (i.e. make a mistake), atc is likely to respond with a correct way to say what you were trying to say. The best thing to do is go with what they say to make it easier on yourself. They will try to help you when you need it, as we will do here.

Example:
Pilot - "Skyhawk 59492H, requesting permission to take off runway 7L (left) and fly to south practice area."
ATC - "92H, clear for takeoff 7L heading 180."
Pilot - "92H, clear for takeoff 7L heading 180."

Notice the shortening of the aircraft call-sign. ALWAYS initially report with the full thing, but sometimes ATC will make life easy for you when you do things right.

The best that I can think of is to listen to real ATCs and see (listen to) atc videos

I learned by playing FSX actually hahaha.

You really do get the basics taught to you. Once you are up to speed on that, you can then transfer to liveatc as previously mentioned.

I find that the busy airports (eg: JFK) all speak way to fast for me to comprehend sometimes. I mean it's all clear mostly, but it's hard to follow. For a noob, it may be overwhelming.

I would start by learning class D/E and unclassified "atc" first. It's simple, easy, and ties in great with VFR training.

After that I would move towards C/B/A as these areas are often more congested. Try smaller airports first, then go for the bigger ones when you can keep up.

Finally, you can also listen to LiveATC extracts on youtube. I learned to do clearance deliveries by watching youtube clips.

As for a call sign? Short and sweet is best. In your example I'd use "Hawaiian One Zero Niner Zero", or, personally, I would like to use "Hawaiian Ten Ninety", but that's not exactly within regulations... I am fond of 3 digits though, they roll of the tounge "Willy approach, Airforce three zero eight with you, ten miles south at angels two eight zero, request visual vectors for runway twelve". I am of the opinion that not every number needs to be broken down to digits, just if it is not easy to distinguish. But again, that's not exactly regulation IIRC...

IRL Example I've used:

"Traffic Cessnock, Cessna fifty two Whisky Romeo Quebec, lines up and rolls runway one seven, departure to the east for the training area. Traffic Cessnock."

:cry: Yeah FSX has a good atc comm. I got my FSX from the county library, but uninstalled it when I reinstalled windows 8 and upgrade it to windows 10.

By the way, does anyone know how YSATC works? Is there a separate software or is it the F12 chat. 'cause I would like to do YSATC if I'm available :D

I think the ATC also uses Phonetic Alphabet.

I think the ATC also uses Phonetic Alphabet.
In YS we try use simple atc procedures. TFan is incharged of ATC. He wrote a guide which should be in the atc forum. Dan and David also wrote a guide. Those three plus vnaf are pretty much the gods of atc in YS plus they use so if you need pointers you can ask them. I've learned alot from them.

But you can only learn so much from texts and teachings. You'll need to practice and get the hang of it. So feel free to hop on and ask anyone whose flying if they need atc? Or if you're available around 10-12pm US EST time.

Use of teamwork is perferred but atc is doable in chat, but expect chat message delays due to lag or congestion
