[COMPETITION] Nov 2021: Scaled Composites VTOL

Post by waspe414 »

The year is 1993. You have been hired as an engineer at Scaled Composites.

Burt Rutan has tasked you with designing a civilian (and optionally military) vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a capacity of 6 passengers or 1000kg cargo. Designs should feel similar to existing Scaled Composites aircraft to maintain brand identity. Unconventional designs are embraced

Powerplant: any
Range: more than 200nm
Speed: more than 200kt
Cargo capacity: 1000kg or 6 passengers
Service ceiling: more than 20,000ft

The competition will run until January 31st, 2022, followed by a community vote for the winner.
TIMER_DEBUG_SPAN_CREATED

Looking for inspiration? List of Rutan's and Scaled's aircraft
Want to design but are unable to build models? Feel free to team up

---

YSFlight related requirements
Aircraft should be built to HQPGAC Standard with a face count limit of 5000
Submissions will be compiled into a single download for voting, and should be ready to be packed (.dat, visual, and collision files required, cockpit and coarse files optional)
Pack filepath will be user/modcomp/202111/[username]/

Introducing the Scaled Composites Aerovert

Capacity: 8 passengers (civ model) or 1000kg load VTOL, 3500kg load CTOL
2000kg fuel allows a 2400km range, with an optional 400kg centerline tank adding another 500km to some models

Capable of loading four AGM-114 Hellfires, 26 rockets or 2 AIM-9s, and a Mk.82 freefall bomb or 400kg fuel tank on the light ground attack variant; four hardpoints up to 750kg each of anti-ship or anti-submarine weaponry, plus sonobuoys in the ASW role; or a dorsal AESA radar and two AIM-9s for self defence on the AEW version

Powered by the venerable PT-6, driveshafts pass power from either engine to either propeller, allowing for safe* engine-out conditions in all flight modes. When not required, the aft propeller can be braked and feathered to reduce cruise drag or improve ground crew quality of life when loading cargo by the rear door

With a base cost of 3.5 million USD, the Scaled Composites Aerovert is a fantastic choice whether saving, taking, or enjoying life

*safe engine-out conditions may include high-speed ground-assisted braking after rapid descent with sudden thrust loss. Contact your doctor if you think safe engine-out conditions are right for you. May induce dizziness, loss of consciousness, irritibility, death, or sudden weight loss. Scaled Composites is not responsible for lost limbs, life, or lunch as a result of ground-assisted braking

The Bell-Makilov 222RW!

Image

Image

Image

Designed in late 1993 as an ambitious project of Tarra Makilov as her ticket into Scaled Composites, the 222RW would be built upon the frame of the Makilov family's personal red Bell 222A. This aircraft would wind up being one of the most mechanically complex of the design competition, a rotor wing having never been attempted before. The rotor system would wind up using a specially designed transmission in order to speed up the rotor while in flight.

The aircraft was able to meet design requirements, although, it would be rather challenging. Using twin J85 turbojets, fuel efficiency would mean the aircraft wouldn't be able to meet its required range. In a first for the 222 airframe, a pair of fuel tanks would be designed in order to bring the range up enough to pass. Eventually they'd almost never fly without their external tanks, who'd have thought that a pair of turbojet engines and a pair of more powerful turboshafts would drink fuel like an alcoholic?

Rather unsurprisingly, the aircraft's max speed would wind up being limited not by the engines, but by the airframe itself. A 222 is, shockingly, not kosher with going super fast. So a do not exceed speed of Mach 0.8 would be set. A large sum of money would be directed towards an advanced flight computer in order to simplify operation of the aircraft. The rotor itself would be automatically controlled, folding and extending based off safe speeds. The collective would see a rather large change with controls devoted to controlling turbojet thrust and rotor blade angle.

As the program went on, a military oriented variant would be built from another 222. Off the shelf components being used to lower cost wherever possible. While not particularly useful, it'd be capable of carrying rockets or laser Hellfires in addition to gunpods. Unfortunately, it wouldn't see any serious consideration due to its lack of range.

The first, and only to date, customer would ironically be the United States Coast Guard. Using it as a rapid response asset where a Pavehawk wouldn't be suitable. It would see a decent amount of use with several aircraft serving over the next decade. Unfortunately, in 2007, the 222RW would be retired. With rising cost of maintenance and the rotor transmission proving less than reliable.

Presenting, the Scaled Composites Cyclone!
The fastest private jet to date. Cruising at Mach 1 at its cruising altitude of 38,000ft. All thanks to the modernised and slightly modified Honda HF120 turbofan engines found in the current hondajet.
With the ability to fly anywhere faster than any other private jet, you will need the fuel to get there. Found under the fuselage is our multi-purpose bay. This can be fitted with another long range fuel tank, or if you have something of own you want fitting we can put it in there too!
You and 5 of your friends can fly around the world with the utmost luxury.
No runway? No problem! The 4 HF120 engines are retrofitted with thrust vectoring nozzles so that when at slow speeds the engines control the plane, when the ailerons cant!
The superlight carbon construction means the aircraft is also the lightest on the market.

The Scaled Composites Cyclone, speed, agility, range and comfort, we have an engine for each.

Speed: 400knots @ sea level / Mach 1 @38,000ft
Range: 600-700nm
Crew: 6 passengers, 1 pilot, 1 copilot
Powerplant: x4 Honda HF120
Power: 40kN / 9000 LBF
I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for my signature, I can tell you I don't have one. But what I do have are a very particular lack of skills, skills I have imagined having over a very long career. Skills that make me are completely useless in any situation. If you stop reading now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't stop reading, I will look for you, I will probably not find you, and I will kill your refrigerator.
