Tips on drawing an accurate runway:
i) Create your runway around the (0,0,0) coordinate point, to make the math easier. If your runway is 3200m long by 62m wide, then create the runway rectangle so that the four corners are on (-1600, -31) (1600, -31) (1600, 31) (-1600, 31). You can always rotate/move it afterwards.
ii) The "Center Line" function (Map -> Insert Element) should be used to create runway centerlines. The "subdivision" number is the number of line segments plus the number of gaps. So if you have 32 line segments on the runway, there will be 31 gaps, and you should put 32+31=63 as the number of subdivisions.
iii) Know the dimensions on various runway elements of a typical internationl airport runway:
- Width: 200 feet (61 meters)
- Length of a center line segment (also the gap between them): 100 feet (30.5 meters)
- Thickness of the center line: 6 feet (1.8 meters)
- Threshold markings: typically 30 meters long, offset from the end of the runway by 6 meters. Lines are 1.8 meters wide with 1.8 meter gaps between. The lines are grouped in two sets, each group centered on the left and right half of the runway.
iv) Threshold markings can be created with the Center Line function also, just think of the markings as a series of very thick but very short dash lines that runs across the runway. E.g. a set of 8 lines threshold markings have 7 gaps, so that is 15 segments in total. Each line segment and gap is 1.8m wide, so the total width is 1.8*15 = 27m. Just create a series of center lines 27m long, 30m wide (length of the threshold markings), and 15 sub divisions.
v) Aiming Point marking. This is the pair of very thick lines a short distance from either end of the runway. They are 45-60m long and 6m wide (although at some airports it can be as much as 10m wide). Their inner sides are 18 - 22.5m apart, and the end that is closer to the end of the runway is either 300m or 400m from it.
vi) Touchdown Zone markings. These are the smaller pairs of lines like the aiming point markings. Minimum size is 22.5m by 3m. The distance between the inner sides of each pair is the same as the aiming point markings. The actual number of marking pairs on each end of the runway depends on the runway length. The distance of each pair (mearsure to the end clser to the runway ends) is 150/300/450 etc. meters from the end of the runway, omitting of course the pair that is closest to the aiming point marking.
vii) Note that the above numbers are not absolute. Airports have certain leeway to make things fit in their particular environent. I highly recommend that anyone who wants to recreate a real life runway should install Google Earth, and learn to use the measurement tool in there to get accurate measurements.
