Will do Quan Vo ;)

Update on Wanaka Airport - most of the tarmac and ground polygons are present and I am working on the elevation grid buildings. See below...

I still have yet to start on the surrounding landscape...

A bit more progress on Wanaka Airport... Unfortunately I haven't had a lot of time for this, but it's coming along, slowly but surely. :)

Here it is:

Feedback welcome! :)

Now to start on the surrounding area...

A bit more work on elevation grids...

This is part of a NZ digital elevation model that I'm using under the Creative Commons licence - it looks very realistic and produces a surprisingly small amount of lag for its size.

Jesus Christ those MOUNTAINS! :o

Oh how I could do so much with that program... Is this public? How does this generator work?

It's called Grigor's Elevation Grid Generator - a tool I only discovered fairly recently while trawling the forums.

Basically, it takes a greyscale bitmap and converts the pixel value into an altitude on an elevation grid.

So I converted the DEM appropriate for the area, pasted the airport on, and... voila! I assume you can download DEM's from all over the world, just as long as they aren't copyrighted, so this could have potential for other map areas and other map makers who are too lazy to model endless mountains... like me...

(Please note the above image was for testing and is not the finalized map... although it will look a lot like that once it's done. :D )

And if you flatten the airport areas of the grid and make a portected poly... bam. raised airports too.
I am an accountant working full-time (and some). I'm not here as often as I would like to be. Send a message if you need me. There are a few people in the community who can get in contact with me urgently if you need - don't be afraid to ask. I just don't check here as frequently as I used to. Sorry!

I did a test landing on the airport pictured above and it works perfectly. Raised airports in realistic mountains! ;)

However, the only problem I see with these expansive grids is lag not only for those of us with older computers but lag inside the scenery editor itself - although this may just be a matter of giving processes higher or lower priority in the Task Manager.

EDIT:
I have made a much smoother version of the elevation grid seen a few posts above, without the noticeable 'terracing' effect. The trick lies in giving the elevation grid less faces than pixels in the scanned bitmap - so the program will see more than one pixel as a face on an elevation grid, averaging the pixel value and smoothing the grid.

Wanaka is completed :D - download link is at the top of the page.
I remember saying before that I was now going to attempt a New Zealand map - however, due to the geographical makeup and size that is NZ, I will not make a full New Zealand map. Why? Because I don't believe YSF or the scenery editor can currently handle it. I may make maps of some offshore islands and other small areas of note (airshows) around the country, so Wanaka won't be the only one.

I might actually use the generator with PMNV/GRUN Japan Extended and see if we can cut 2-4 weeks on Geological additions out of the dev schedule. But other than that - The screenshot - and those mountains are to DIE for.
I have got to try Wanaka when I get the chance.

Have fun with that. ;)

I'm thinking I might attempt a fictional combat map for my next project.

And here's the start of the project mentioned above:

The rest of the map will probably be islands and atolls for naval/aerial battles.

A little side-project I've started working on when the fictional combat map gets too monotonous - this shouldn't be too hard to guess.

As a side project, I'll work through as many NZ airports as I can. However, I probably won't release them to the public unless they're in a real map...

How about a map of each island? North Island and South Island. They should be small enough by themselves to work in the scenery editor and client. Also I would suggest making Auckland and Wellington with start positions on the different parts of the approach flight path, this would be great to see and be great for plane spotting screenshots.

I think that NZ's size could be handled OK by YSF and the scenery editor, but it's the geography and general mountainous structure that presents the issue, as detailed elevation grids really slow down the scenery editor. It could be done with a low-quality elevation grid, but I want it to be really detailed  .
But then again, there are K2W's Central Japan maps... I've taken a look at them and it uses a fair number (about 10 or so) of rectangular grids slotted together, at reasonably high detail. I guess I might have to come to a compromise between real-life quality and what's possible...
