Airlander 10

Post by Neocon »

I just came across this story about the Airlander 10. How many times have we seen a sci-fi show where some aliens or alternate world uses airships instead of planes. Maybe this is the future of short-range cargo transportation? The FAA is going to have a stroke.

Just from the photos of the cockpit, that looks damn fun to fly (or take some aerial shots).

Tried to see the article at work but apparently the work filters attributed the cover image to a butt/boobs so it censored the entire page.

I found an article that said there might have been some damage to the cockpit, but nobody was injured.

Here is report on ASN Database - https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=189502

The prototype was damaged during a landing incident on its second, 100 minutes, UK test flight. Damage was apparent to flight deck. Early press reports of striking a telegraph pole have been denied. The crew were uninjured.

It looks like the developers of Airlander decided luxury tourism/transportation would be more profitable than short-range heavy cargo work.

The link said it automatically deflated for safety, so it might have failed as intended and be relatively easy to fix.

Being a kite flyer, I know the large soft kites have a similar system. They are flown on multiple lines, one, or more will fail at a certain pull. The others then, by how they are attached, make the kite turn back to front. This lets the air inside out, by having the wind push it out of the 'intake'. Some also have a system that pulls velcro 'zips', to assist in the quick deflation. Bottom pic looks something like the fail-safe zip idea.
