I fell asleep listening to this once. Never would've thought the leader of a borderline death metal band would make something so chill.

Great track from a jazz/synthwave group that's not well-known - Funktelligence. Another blast from The Weather Channel past. This is from one of their albums that someone uploaded on Youtube, I've set it to where you can go to the link and hit the play button.

The Wellerman, The Irish Rovers (Premiere!)

Now we go waaaaayyy back to 1977 when we were down under in New Zealand with the CBC Vancouver crew, the best crew in the industry. We were filming our "The Irish Rovers in New Zealand" show.

LYRICS

Code: Select all

There was a ship that went to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, and her bow dipped down
Blow, my bully boys, blow
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
Some day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
She had not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore
The captain called all hands and swore
He'd take that whale in tow
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale's tail came up and caught her
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her
When she dived down below
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
Some day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
For forty days or even more
The line went slacked and tight once more
All boats were lost there were only four
But still the whale did go
Well, as far as I heard the fight's still on
The line's not cut, the whale's not gone
The Wellerman makes his regular call
T' encourage the Captain and the crew and all
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
Some day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go

Another jazz favourite of mine, which also used to get a lot of airtime on TWC Local On the 8s back in the day (have I mentioned exactly how much I used to watch TWC?).

Every time I listen to this, I have mental images of abandoned places - especially Six Flags New Orleans, an amusement park that's sat quiet ever since Hurricane Katrina flooded it out. And right now, here in the middle of an ice storm-induced blackout, it's more appropriate than ever.

A double feature this time. This group from Australia has been growing on me very quick - The Seekers. Great singers all of them (especially Judith Durham's - but the guys complement her voice very nicely).

Like how they incorporated a "train theme" if you will into the song.

More from The Seekers. This one could totally pass for an Irish-like folk song. Great tune!

One of my favourite pieces by Beethoven. Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe have done it justice!

Sometimes, you just have to enjoy a little jazz fusion.
