Hello YSFHQ :)

Post by john3voltas »

Hi there!
I'm 37 years old, I'm from Portugal and I love simulation games.
I've been an "on-and-off" reasonably happy user of FlightGear for around 5 years now.
My main PC fried and my laptop can't run FG properly (less than 10fps...).
I was told about YFS and I'm very well impressed with what I've seen so far but I am still very newbie at it.
I'm mostly interested in civilian flying (no dog-fighting here).
Hope here I can learn a lot about YFS with you guys.
Cheers

Welcome, and in case you are wondering if you are the oldest around here, the answer is no, you're not the oldest. You are not even the second oldest, and the oldest guy around is old enough to be your father. ;) :D

Yeah, another civilian pilot between us! Welcome aboard ;) I started YSF the same way, searching for a free flight simulator light enough to be run on my old PC.

Taskforce, I was just wondering what that '58' meant...

I wouldn't mind being the eldest around but it is reassuring to know that there are more old-school guys out there when I'm flying ;).
Many thanks for the warm welcoming :P.

It totally is for me too... I'm pushing the Virtual Airline I'm in to let things be done a little more "professionally" and I'm sure that you, as an old FG flyer, could do the thing very well.

Hi DavideV,
Please note that I'm only a long time "on and off" player of FG.
But that doesn't mean that I'm an experienced player or anything similar.
In fact, I can still barely take off and land a Cessna 172p  .
Nevertheless, I'll be glad to help whenever I can ;) .
But right now I'm still learning YFS and I'm still trying to figure it's features/limitations.
For that, I'm about to post in the support section.
Cheers

Believe me, if you do things properly in YSF you can fly with any simulator as well. I've been flying with YS since 3-4 years and I was able to land in FSX at the first try, with realism options all set to maximum (just rudder autocoordination on, as I flew with the mouse). Try to search on the internet for "Stick and Rudder" and read it... ;)

Have a nice flying! ;)

@Gunny,
De nada :).

@DavideV
Well, I do know what a rudder is for.
Use it all the time when landing to properly align my plane with the lane that I'm using.
Wish I had a yoke with a rudder...
Maybe one day I can buy a yoke.
For now I have to stick with using keyboard.
There's an interesting DIY yoke here.
I guess building a rudder to go with it can't be that hard, right?
Cheers

When I said "stick and rudder" I was talking about this book.

I really haven't found a need for rudder pedals for YS. The rudder physics are especially lacking, so precision and control aren't so much of an issue. A twist stick should do you just fine for coordinated turns. (And any chopper flying, as anti-torque is unheard of...)

Strange...
So what do you do when you want to take off/land with 50kt crosswinds?
I got used to the rudder from my use of FG and now I just can't live without it.

Actually, that is not SO unuseful. With such a strong wind you have to give rudder in order to go straight before you take off (I've just tried), then you roll as usual.
