Decals only on one side of the tail

Post by DavideV » Fri Aug 19, 2011 9:20 am

Hi all,

I'm asking this in case anyone have ever had the same problem. I put a decal on the right side of the tail, then duplicated and mirrored it on the left, then shrinkwrapped both and the work appears to be very fine on both side of the tail, at least in blender.

Then, when exported the whole thing in .dnm, in YSF the decal appears only on the right side of the tail.

Any hint?

Thanks.

After mirroring, export as an .srf then re-import it.
At first I used to get angry, now I try to be amused.

Be sure that the normals are facing in the right direction. When mirrorring an object, my normals usually are all wrong, I use flip normals to aim them at the right direction.

I don't understand. If normals are right before mirroring and you correctly mirror the mesh, they should all be in place... you say there's a bug?

Decals generally have all their normals facing a certain way. When you mirror it, the normals of the second decal that just got made will almost certainly face the same direction as the original, which means you probably won't be seeing it from the place you want. It's not a bug, more of a quirk. You just need to select the second decal and flip normals.

Could you send us both the .blend (the most important) and the .dnm so that we diagnose your problem?

Wow I just re-read your question. Dude, you have to APPLY modifiers for them to export. :)

I know, and I did it because it was the first thing that came into my mind but it didn't work.

Actually, Neil's solution just worked fine (export and re-import).

It's not really a fix for me. My scripts are supposed to work and not to need to such a trick. If there is a bug somewhere, it as to be fixed, not to be avoided by a trick.
If you still have the faulty .blend, I would have a look into it.

:(

Sorry, I overwrote it. If it happens again, I'll contact you.
