There's unfortunately no way of having a ground object point where the wind is going unless you preset both.

Actually, it is possible. You just have to program the object to automatically sync with the wind.

Along that line I was half-way imagining a 1/6 scale aircraft tethered to a pole/tower that WOULD respond to the wind. A model of a model as it were. or a model of an airfoil anyway.

That would work, although the aircraft now just drift sideways. Maybe the pole would keep it from sliding so it could turn.

This is a rough approximation of what I was imagining.

An actual virtual wind-sock would be alright too.

100 knots is pretty windy, and that's from experience.

I personally think the wind sock would be easier, just maybe not as amusing.

Missile combat made fun.Locking on is waiting for a circle to stick to an aircraft and turning red so it's just like real.

Just to clear things up, you guys need to remember that YSFlight has a completely different physics engine to FlightGear and FS2004/FSX, it also has a different file structure so wind-socks and stuff like that wouldn't work.

Bullshit. The game knows where the wind is blowing, and it knows how hard. The typical USA windsock that Soji would be familiar with has discrete stages of "floppiness" depending on how hard the wind is blowing.

Ever since the two wishlist system broke, and we only have the FANTASY wishlist, anything goes, remotely feasible or not. Truth is this thread just doesn't matter for much, so it's not much use arguing over stuff.

Aircraft buffeting from minor aggravation to catastrophic failure linked to wind velocity scale. ;)

This one really needs to be put in the game:The ability to track your deaths, kills, landings and takeoffs on your ''name'' like a profile for a MMO game.

Believe it or not, I've seen a windsock! It's on the map that Gunny just re-released, Fishbed6 was it... The Grand Canyon Map; the Landing strips have windsocks (at least the 'Day01' ver. does). I don't know anything about the properties of that Item, but it does move every time the wind changes. I wonder if it is usable in any of the other maps, or if the creator of that map (Moro was it) did something special to make it work just in that one map?
Gunny, would you experiment by putting one in another map to see if the properties remain the same? I'd try it myself if I thought I would have a chance to pull it off successfully. BTW that is a decent map!

Edit: Oops, Sorry, now that I think about it, that looks like a backdoor request, Thanks anyway.

I tried it out, and it seems to stay stationary no matter the environment. The Fishbed6 Day01 version seems to be one giant replay itself. That's probably the reason why he was able to change the wind speeds, and make a functional wind sock.

Thanks Phil, that's disappointing, I'm beginning to wonder if it will be possible to sync it with the wind at all. Maybe if we use some .dat data that says it has a wing area...? Then again, I'm probably just grasping... "sigh".

for wind tracker?

simple, a ground object that releases a bright smoke. This smoke is blown by the wind.
