How to make the propeller spinning faster

Post by DavideV » Fri Sep 09, 2011 11:44 am

I've tried this very easy "trick" and it worked; it consists of parenting the propeller to a spinning empty object so you have the propeller spinning over another spinning object: if correctly aligned, the rotation speed is multiplied.

Here is the procedure to follow in Blender:
- Create an empty object [add a plane mesh in object mode, then in edit mode delete all the mesh's vertices]
- Align the new object with the propeller's spinning axis
- If needed, change the local axes' orientation to match with the propeller's one.
- Make the new object parent of the propeller [in object mode: select the propeller, then Shift+RMB on the new object , then Object > Parent > Make Parent]
- Set the CLA property of the new object to 3 (spinner)

The rotation speed can be multiplied by repeating the above procedure parenting the first empty object to another empty object with the same function. I did it 4 times and now the spinning speed of the propeller is way better!

How do I make spinning objects? Like engine blades?

You could have adjusted the speed in DNMviewer, too.

No huge reason. I just surf through stuff really fast and I'm pretty sure the "Who's online" list would slow down as I moved around the site. :)

Yup double (or even triple) spin object is the only way you can change the rotation speed. In actual DNM coding it would look something like this:

Code: Select all

SRF "prop_spin1"
FIL blank.srf
CLA 3
NST 1
STA 0.00 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 1
POS 0.00 0.00 3.12 0 -16384 0 1
CNT 0.00 0.00 0.00
REL DEP
NCH 1
CLD "prop_spin2"
END
SRF "prop_spin2"
FIL propellor.srf
CLA 3
NST 1
STA 0.00 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 1
POS 0.00 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 1
CNT 0.00 0.00 0.00
REL DEP
NCH 0

That slider only simulates the throttle setting in game. It does not affect the actual spinning speed.

How do I do that infinite animation?

Just set the CLA property of the object(s) to 3. That's it. No actual animation needed in Blender.

EDIT: Another thing, but I don't know if there's another way to do it: you can also make a counter-rotating propeller by adding two empty object and mirroring on the local axis (and parenting them, of course). In this way, the first just cancel the rotation because it spins at the same speed of the propeller, the other one to have the same speed of the first propeller, but with opposite rotation.

* sigh *

The throttle slider in dnmviewer does not change anything on the DNM. It only lets you check out the effect of the spinning propellor within dnmviewer. You are mistaken if you think you can change the rotation speed in ysflight other than the in game throttle setting or using the multi-spinner object method discussed here.

I know what the slider controls. With the slider at maximum, I opened Settings/Propeller Revolution. Changing the 10 to say, 30, it noticeably sped up the prop's rpm. Setting it to 50 was enough to slow down the graphics of my comp.

Well, the whole thing can be tested. Use your method on any propelled airplane, then save the DNM and fly it on YSF to see if anything has changed ;)

Okay, I tried it with LuckyBearGod's Fat Albert, the aircraft I was messing around with originally. The modified one did seem faster when placed next to the original. The blur on the prop made it hard to tell. I'm going to try it with the NCA 182 next as it does not have a propeller blur.

Well if you guys are willing to take a few seconds using Dnmviewer, you can increase the rotation speed of a propeller by making it the child of an empty .srf ("null.srf") which has a CLA of 3. So long as you have it aligned in the right direction it'll do the job.

That is exactly the same thing I said in the 1st post, except that is done in blender..
