I was flying back from Oklahoma a few years ago and got stuck in Beckley. Nice folk. An interesting combination of inbreeding and diabetes, but good people. And it's a bit weird flying into Martinsburg and knowing that the C-5 taxiing behind you is burning more fuel at idle for three minutes than your PA-28 will between engine overhauls.

IIRC, Beckley is almost like a carrier landing. It sticks out on this promontory into the valley. Fun to go into cuz you have NO IDEA how high you are above the field until you're on short final.

Does this mean the airport is going to actually be planted
into the terrain at 2500 ft?

No unfortunately not. This edition of scenery editor does not have that capability.
But according to Soji the next edition will be able to have a base elevation to work from so that runway elevations will be to proper scale. And you may actually have to set your altimeter accordingly.Wouldn't that be something.
As it stands now we can only graphically show an elevated runway with no real data involved.
And as I have not really practiced making elevation grids for anything more than buildings they will all be on a boring flat plane.Sorry.
I really should work on that I think.

Flying on the Mid-East map a had occassion to come to rest on the terrain,
and could only wheel down the mountain-side; but other than being at an
angle it went just fine (ground is ground I guess), I was thinking at the
time that all I needed was some smoother patch of ground and I would be
able to get up to rotating speed.

I am going to try some thing that is really going to push the lag envelope. As if I haven't already.
The pacific rim from Japan to LA east to west and north to south Alaska to antarctica and as many points in between as I can fit.I am going to use existing scenery's already in Ys Like Taiwan,Japan the British Indian territorys,Hawaii,Okinowa.Kodiak,Mcmurdo.I just wish Flake had downloaded Australia now that Qantas is back in the air.
Obviously even if I get it to work on line play is out of the question.
But just think of the tran pacific flights you could have logging 6-7 hour flights.
Well pipe dream or nightmare we will see how it goes. :D

Are you going to line it up like with an azimuthal equidistant projection centered around Hawaii? Or how are you going to deal with distortion?

I hereby announce my official retirement from scenery making.I am doing this as a way of encouraging the newer members to go and create there own scenery on there own.No one has a better understanding of there own areas better than someone who lives there. And honestly folks Scenery Editor is not that hard to master unlike other programs.Besides what are you newer guys gonna do when the experienced modelers and scenery makers retire or just plain leave.
Mods you may lock this if you wish. :D

I have been giving serious thought to re-entering the scenery making business lately. But before recommissioning the Battalion I would like to get some feedback from the community.Keeping in mind that this would be a more casual re-entry meaning don't expect any huge scenery's like I used to do.I will only be doing individual airports with possibly surrounding towns and city's.And possibly doing some requests once or twice a year. But my first project will be to resurrect the Miami airport that I never finished in high detail. So what do you think is there a need for me to return and put out some mega monster scenery's.Oh yes one more proviso I will only be using my tried and true scenery editor not the new experimental stuff.

I'm right glad to see you wanting to stay at it Gunny.
I'd love to see some more of your creations.
But don't feel like you have to create x so many.
