How does texture paint work in blender?

Google it, but don't use it for YSFlight mod's.

Yup. Vince also added a method to do painting by materials if I recall correctly, but I've not toyed with that. If you're having a hard time painting in blender look at kuro's pdf tutorials in our tuts section.

About vertex paint, to forget to turn on the painting mask.
Yes, material can be used, but only the colour, alpha and emit parameters are exported.
