Space Map: 3D Rotating Terrain, Making Stars and Planets

Post by Maroon 5 » Mon May 14, 2012 9:36 pm

I am trying to create a Space map where you can fly around in some spacecraft addons. Is it possible to rotate .ter files in 3D, and how would you create a sphere with the effect of a graduation quad strip, but in 3D. And will it be possible to create a planet with a shallow curve that won't affect landings and takeoffs? Maybe a 200 mile diameter planet.

That's an interesting question. If you set up the ground to be all black with white runway lights planted every so often in a fairly random path, and then pasting several sections like that together to get your ground, it should work. Certain things will not be space like, like the altitude affect on speed and thrust, but some of the buta space craft should work out for that.

Rather than run it at night, (You'd never see the planes), make the sky color black and take a look at some of the older maps for how to place stars. I'd just make more runway lights, but place them at a high altitude when you input it.

There is a map called "eee_Duran night", or something like that, it has the eee prefix and has night in the map name. That was set at night, but did not use the night environment setting of YSF to simulate night and it worked out well. I don't know the DL link, but a search should bring it up.

Hope that helps!

You can't make a sphere that you can land on unless it is a ground object, in which case you wouldn't get textures on it. You could create "planets" via http://forum.ysfhq.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=815, but you'd have to make a coll file or else they'd have no collision.

Similarly you could create a .ter sphere and a giant invisible ground object in exactly the same place to land on.

I think there used to be a "space" map at one point, if I'm not mistaken... There was a floating carrier-type island at about 10k feet with 2 crossing runways with arresting cables. You could fly all the way around it. I do believe it was from the Japanese community, I'll look into google tomorrow.

I do remember that map as well.

Also, if anyone makes any other spacecraft, I'd recommend making them super light and with large wing areas - that way they'll hardly fall under gravity.

I'm thinking 0.01 weight w/o fuel and 0.03 w/ fuel, and change the wing area and maneuverability factors to make it more realistic. Also, I might try making a half-planet out of an elevation grid. If so, it would only work on the test versions of YS and the upcoming stable release. (remember the runway bumps? you can create and elevated airport at a 3D angle!).

I would also appreciate the download of the space map.

And a few ground object asteroids and space stations and stuff like that if anyone's willing to do it.

Learn to physics.

No matter what the weight, It will still fall to earth all the time like a bag of bricks.

THat is true, but he is also changing the wing area. that should retard the force of gravity pretty well. Keeping the same surface area, the lowered weight will make the drag forces have a higher impact. (at least in real life, not sure about YSF life.) Its kinda like attaching a 20g mass to a 50m^2 parachute and then trying again with a 1000kg mass. you're gonna notice a difference.

Try throwing a tennis ball and a baseball and see which goes further. The tennis ball will fall short because it doesn't have the same mass, but a similar cross section and drag force. It has less momentum and thus falls short. High school AP Physics lab FTW! That was a fun one. :D

Was this space map on YSP or any certain download site by any chance?

I have that map if no one finds it online. Let me try to find it. So many add-ons to load...

I've found it! 'Tis called "MESH".

Yup, under the runways.

Air. As for that link, "that's the real trick, isn't?"-Han Solo.

Only link I can find for it is on the forum but I'm not authorized to read the thread. It's the "once lost addons" thread. The pack is HADP and contains Merida_Island in addition to MESH.

We are the first space squadron in YS, lol.

And that map reminds me of the Electrosphere. AC3 anyone?
