Ever hear of something like this before?

Post by Honey Badger »

Apparently, about a week ago my dad's company had a brand new helicopter blow off an oil rig in the Gulf...no one was hurt but it made for a pretty funny story. Apparently, the pilot and his co-pilot were refueling the aircraft in order to fly back the the base. They hadn't tied down the aircraft properly because it was just a quick stop (stupid, right?). They were about to hop in and start it up when a powerful gust began to slide the helicopter across the landing pad (at the tippy top of the rig). The pilot actually jumped on the skid trying to add some weight and stop it from sliding but he had to jump off when the helicopter began to tip over the edge. Amazing, the helicopter landed sideways on a walkway below and DIDN'T fall in the water (remember: BRAND new helicopter...ಠ_ಠ). My dad was actually in the area at the time so he was the guy who flew the two pilots back. It took a couple days for the rig crew to figure out a way to hoist the aircraft without dropping it in the water or doing further damage. All the other pilots were wishing that it could have been one of their old beat up Bell 206's. To summarize whole thing, my mom received an email covering in detail, the proper way to tie a helicopter for refueling on a rig...

If I were asked to sum up this event in one word, that word would be FAIL.
