American Airlines

Post by VNAF ONE » Fri Jan 18, 2013 3:10 am

Soo, the airline in my books as the one with the single worst paint job just took a major upgrade. I think it looks awesome, like really really good.

I saw the annunciation that AA did yesterday, also saw the video that told their story. But loved this design, especially the B777.

I loved the bare metal look of the old ones, but apparently they were forced to change because the composites must be painted no matter what... I do like the new look too, though.

I agree that it used to look good in the old scheme, but it really has become more and more outdated and I think that's why they basically had to change it. All other American airlines have changed theirs within the last decade at least. I think it will help them get more customers that may be more attracted to an airline that at least looks like it's trying to keep up with the rest and the times.

The reactions on this forum are a lot friendlier (and adult-like) than what I've seen on other forums (read: JP.net). It's ok if you don't like it, like I said before, to each his own, but some people go wah-wah for every livery change. It's like nothing can satisfy them haha. That being said, I am a long-time fan of the former livery, but this new one is pretty good, I like it as well.

Wingz is actually correct, the major reason for the change was the composite fuselage of the 787s and the 350s. Now the Airbus narrowbodies still have a mostly metal fuselage so they can be left in polished metal, but if you change one, you have to change the whole lot.

The reason AA has had the bare metal pattern in its liveries ever since it was created was that it sheds off hundreds of pounds of weight that paint puts on the planes. Not anymore... But the cost savings that the new planes will bring in terms of fuel efficiency should help offset that somewhat.

My general rant: I will call them blended winglets, not Sharklets; There is no CEO, it's just simply put, an Airbus 319/320/321, or the 320NEO, 321NEO etc. I didn't land IN DAL, I landed AT DAL. On the other hand, I did land in Dallas.

Yeah composites and UV light do not mix well. I see it in fiberglass boats all the time. If you do not coat the fiberglass with gel coat, the entire thing goes bad and the chemical bonds break down rather quickly.

It's an end of an era that has been around since the 20s and 30s when planes started to become all metal. I'll miss seeing the gleaming metal. :(

Maybe it's just me, but the new paint scheme makes the fuselage kinda "bland".
But that's maybe just a simple matter of personal tastes. Good to see they're modernizing their fleet in more ways than one.

Plus, I like what they did to the tail.

I actually kinda like the new one. I still of course have a soft spot for the old one but this one pretty neat. Just like with Southwest though, I'll probably prefer the old one....

I prefer the old one. Now time to blow $200 on a new set of Gemini jets in updated AA colors... :x
