nope! I wish it was the laser... I would be a super awesome sailer if it was a laser. I mainly sail lasers now adays, but it was actually in a boat originally designed for day sailing, that lots of people turn from crusing boats into racing machines. Lots of nautical engineering and planning go into the boats.

In terms of class restrictions, it is a lot like the International 14. The rigging, blades, and hull shape are all defined at some level, but beyond that, you have free-reign to do what you want in the boat in terms of setup and rigging.

FYI: For confidentiality, I am not publically stating the class of boat.

I will say that my record stands at (1,2,5,6,2,2,2,2) in all eight years I've sailed the senior division, and when I was eligable for the junior division I was (1,1,1,DNF,1,1) and hold the record for most wins as a junior. Note: all the places are final regatta positions in order of year won. They do not all overlap for juniors and seniors in the same year.

Sounds good. I sold the Etchells because of school. So now I'm cashed up and have bought some sails for the big boat.

Number 3 jib, plain kevlar with internal tafeta for $2900. Not too bad. Came from a local loft so its a stitched sail rather than a one-piece. Hasn't arrived yet so I'm very excited. I've also bought a second hand asymmetrical, fractional hoist, 1.5oz heavy weather kite for the strong sea breezes. Should be a blast!

Currently we're sitting second on series score. Last race was a doozey. Got nailed on the start but managed to keep up, past everyone under kite and had a big lead. On the last leg, we kept getting knocked. Breeze was really shifty as another wind pattern was coming through. Managed to drop our 15 minute lead into a 4 minute win.

Ah well.

Shifts are not fun to be on the wrong side of. We were able to eck out a 2nd because the guy we were trying to beat decided to take a flier thru the dirty air of all the spinakers off to the left, and we went to the right. My skipper managed to cleat the main, and loose the tiller during the tack and we took on 50 gallons of water (low freeboard in the transom). Still managed to finish the race in second 3 boats ahead of the other guy because of his bad air and a nice right shift half way up the course.

The guy who won for the 3rd time in a row now, came in first in all but 2 races. 1 his side stays came undone (chartered boat) and the other he came in second to his competition from California who is stupidly fast in the medium-ish wind (7-10 kts)

The race I won was when The eventual winner lost his side stay. It was blowing 20 steadily and gusting upwards of 25+ kts. Perfect for my skipper and myself as we are both over 6 feet and 175 and 190 pounds respectively. Most of the other crews were below 250 lbs total crew weight.

3 sails: Main, jib, symetrical spinaker. Roughly 17 feet long.

The main has 100 square feet, jib; 50 sq ft, and spinaker; 95 sq ft. On a tight reach the spinaker is simply a monster to get right.

Regular old fashioned sail-cloth sowed together, none of this fansy-shamsy see-thru stuff or one-piece sails. Do you know of North Sails? I use their sails, but we may be changing the spinaker to a different company...we'll have to see.

Nothing wrong with Dacron. As long as you don't flog it too much then it won't stretch as quickly. I know North, they're the biggest/most technologically advanced in the world  . Some say that they get the shape really nice and fast, but the sail fails structurally after a year or two.

Doyle seems to have a fairly good reputation down here. I guess it depends on how much you want to spend.

Anyone else sail?

So Oracle Team USA won the America's Cup after beating the Kiwis in the final race of the series.

I was pretty annoyed by the Yanks winning (even though the majority of the crew were Aussie/Kiwi sailors) but now I'm really excited. Bob Oatley, owner of Wild Oats XI and Hamilton Island, has been accepted as the next challenger for the Cup.

What does this mean? Australia is re-entering the America's Cup which is likely to result in a USA vs AUS race in the next few years.
