MIG 29 & SU 27

Post by Silver Sergeant » Sun Feb 09, 2014 2:28 am

i have aways fascinated the MIG 29 of the Russian air force and i mostly ignore all the other Russian fighters, now after playing a flightsim called SU 27 flanker (which turn out to be very awesome). now i have a lot of question require your opinion.
  • if MIG were to dogfight with SU, who would win?
  • is SU or MIG more manoeuvrable?
  • which fighter is faster?
  • which fighter have stronger weapons?
what type of fight would a MIG or SU prefer?
    • diving and rising with superior climb rate and energy,
    • or classic ww2 turning melee,
    • or a long range sniping with missiles
    • or the hit and run
  • Is SU a better air cover aircraft? so is MIG worse at air strike?
  • Over all is SU or MIG more cost efficient?
  • SU or MIG is a better bomber interceptor?
  • which aircraft is better at scouting? or defending a nations border?
I would love to hear your oppinion on my favourite aircrafts.

for me, mig 29 is cooler :D

To answer each of your questions:

- This has happened before in African conflicts; 1 Su-27 shot down 4 MiG-29's.
- MiG is more manoeuvrable at slower, dogfighting speeds.
- Su-27 is faster.
- Su-27 can carry more weapons and has a more powerful radar, although the MiG-29 has the ability to lock onto enemies up to 45 degrees off it's nose (Su is probably more like 15 degrees).
- MiG would prefer to get closer, Su would prefer to stay at a distance and fight at supersonic speeds with greater kinetic energy.
- Su-27 is likely the better at providing air cover, because it can monitor a larger area with speed and radar.
- Depends on your budget; an old MiG-29 is very cheap (~$10 million), but Su-27's are only $30m. Current models go for about $32m (MiG-29K) and $45m (Su-35).
- Su-27 is far better for bomber interception; higher ceiling, speed, range and radar.
- Su-27 again for the same reasons.

Being ex-241st, I like the Su-27 more than the MiG-29, but both are pretty smexy fighters.

so from your conclusion MIG 29 fighters are just cheap metal sent for export,or so that you can have a fighter flying when the country run out of funds?
since Su 27 flanker is pretty much better than MIG 29 in most way?

(i still really like mig 29...but SU 27 is very awesome too :D )

It's not so much that they're cheap metal - they're good fighters, but when it comes to electronics (which makes up a very percentage of the price of a modern fighter) they're more simplistic than western fighters.

Russian engine tech isn't always the most reliable either (I think modern RD-93 engines are fine, and maybe even the older RD-33 versions, but supposedly the AL-31 engine for the Su-27 family isn't too reliable).
