Re: The Welsh Addons Hangar

Post by Dan »

Today I've taken the U2-S out of the hangar and into the air for flight testing at the Welsh Addons Hangar Secret Operations Testing Area (Just of the M4 Junction 45). The aircraft perfoms well, though at the moment I'm fine tuning the roll rate to make it slightly unstable. At the moment the aircraft can climb well to 50,500 ft, though I'd like to get as close as I can to 70,000 ft.

I'm halfway through building the glass cockpit now so I should be finished soon. Once all building work is completed I'll start repainting and modyfiing the aircraft to create the following variants:
>US-S
>TU-2S Two seat trainer version
>ER-2 Nasa's Earth Resources research version

Could you do a Sukhoi Superjet to complement the MRJ in CEP 2-3?

Nice work. Didn't think the U2 was that unstable however.
Fliped out of the arena, again! :(

Is the U-2R the same Senior Span?

Seriously? This is an individual's development thread not a personal request thread.

Surprisingly being board designed and built in the early 50s well before the advent of computer controlled flight systems [much like myself] the roll rate of the U-2 is surprisingly stable for a wing of that configuration. You would think that much like a glider its wing would be relatively delicate. I say wing because it is constructed of a single monolithic structure design that passes through the fuselage and is capable of taking a rather high g-role rate without to much deflection of the wing tips in flight.Of course it is a sub-mach aircraft. So in other word Dan don't make the role to unstable. ;)

Thanks gunny and plunderbird, I'll take your advice on board. I originally planned to make it hard to fly at low speeds, from a video I watched the aircraft seemed to always roll slightly so I thought that action maybe to do with the wings. I'll give it another go up in the air, though this time I'll make the roll rate stable with a slight degree of roll. I really want to get the flight characteristics spot on! :)

@Monoceros Edited my last comment: Yeah I just checked now and you're right. I only realized yesterday that they now classify single seaters as U2-S. Thanks for the heads up. :)

Over the past few days I have installed the cockpit panels, finished the TU-2S modification and have started repainting. Here is my progress so far!
P.s there's a few more liveries that still need to be done :)

Hay Dan I do not want to put to fine a point on this[since you have already done the animation work] but the pogos are removed by ground crew just before the take off run.So retraction is not an issue.Just a point of information and not a criticism of any sort. They look great. :)

Hey Gunny, No worries. Here's a video I used as reference which shows that the pogo's fall away at a certain speed. My pogo's are animated on the bomb bay door key, so when you press 1 they fall away and disappear. :)
The Takeoff is 1:18 into the video

If you are going by speed, then you could use the VGW animation to do that. Just put the two speeds relatively close together (start falling off and all the way off) and it would happen fast like in that video. then after landing, it would be like the pogos were put back in.

The bombbay animation will give you more control and certainly works, but it might be worth considering the automatic niceness of VGW...

No problem Gunny, to be honest I didn't even know anything about the U2 untill the BBC Shown that James may at the edge of space program. After watching it for the first time I became very intrested in it. I'm also suprised that this aircraft is still flying today! :)

Yeah but, like you said, that means that when the aircraft comes back in for landing, the pogos would reappear. This is not the case in RL though. Hence, maybe make null.srfs have that VGW CLA, with the main pogos parented to those null.srfs and having an arrestor hook CLA (which is tied to the brakes) so that the pogos fall away with the null srfs during takeoff but do not reappear during landing (since I'm assuming that people put their brakes on before touchdown).

Also for the pogos to fall away nicely, you might also want to put in the VGWSPED1 and VGWSPED2 variables, and set them to the intended speed. This would ensure that the pogos fall away at that specific speed instead of over a spectrum of speeds with normal VGW animation.
