S-46N Blackfish FSX Conversion

Post by Swift » Thu Feb 12, 2015 2:19 am

well, a fsx mdl conversion has hit the web, namely youdontknowxpands s-46n blackfish. i used model converter x to change the mdl into a 3ds file that blender could use. converting models from fsx to ysf is no easy task, nor do i want to explain why. does anybody know how to smooth the vertices? for some reason they appear jagded, but i don't know why. any ideas will be put to good use.

If you use blender, there is a button that will allow you to do that. Smooth Shading. However I am unsure where it is in anything other than 2.49. You might also wish to watch my video about shading issues that will come up when you use the smoothing features in blender.

Very good! I would suggest to select the unsmoothed fuselage for example and remove the doubles. From there you can seperate the upper part from the lower part of the fuselage and figure out how to control the lighting on the plane.

lol I don't recommend doing such conversions from FSX unless you can really commit to it.

Lots of merging and painting to do and object centering and animations need to be redone as well. And on top of that you'll end up with a large dnm size. And you probably need permission from the original modder (as courtesy).

looks fine.

i've come too far to quit this. i'm learning more about centering and animation through this thing than i ever thought, this is definately a project to finish. besides, even though its a pain in the arse, its worth it. thanks for the help guys, you have no idea how much it will help.

the only problem with these conversions are animations and large dnm files. but this still looks pretty nice!

The S-46N is complete-ish. Now I shall start on paint schemes. I will also turn the -46N into the -46S and the -46A, just like the FSX versions.

You work fast! How big is the dnm file? Those cockpit look pretty detailed.

2.3mb, considering the original mdl file size I think its a start. I can take it down to 1.8mb by removing overlapping vertices. just need someone to paint the pilot though...

alright news flash. the S-46 along with an updated S-4R will be released as part of the VFA-121 pack. Should come up tomorrow to mark the 1 year anniversary of the original aircraft's first flight in the YS world.
