Rightly described as a war-winning naval aircraft, the F6F Hellcat was developed from the F4F Wildcat. Designed and produced in record time, the Hellcat's combat debut in August 1943 firmly swung the air power balance of the war in the Pacific in favour of the United States. From then on, all the major Pacific air battles were dominated by the F6F.
Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, the robust Hellcat was credited with 75% of all enemy aircraft destroyed by the US Navy carrier pilots with an overall kills to losses ratio in excess of 19:1. The Hellcat was America's all-time top 'ace-making' aircraft with no less than 307 pilots credited of downing five or more enemy aircraft while flying the Grumman fighter.
When the last aircraft rolled off the production line in November 1945, it made the total Hellcat production figure of 12,272, 11,000 of which were built in just two years. The swift production was attributed to the soundness of the original design, which necessitated few engineering changes while production was underway.
The F8F Bearcat was the last in the Grumman series of carrier-based fighters that had started back in 1931. It was one of the fastest piston-engined aircraft ever and was built to a US Navy specification calling for a small, light, high-performance naval interceptor.
Grumman's design team aimed to create the diminutive high-performance fighter around the mighty Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp that had been used on the Hellcat and Tigercat. The aircraft was 20% lighter than former and had a 30% greater climb rate than its Grumman stablemate as well as being 80kph/50mph faster.
Many features of the Bearcat's design were reportedly inspired by a captured Luftwaffe Fw 190 fighter that had been handed over to Grumman. The Bearcat's large propeller required a long landing gear which gave it its characteristic nose-up altitude on the ground. It was also the first US Navy aircraft to be fitted with a bubble canopy that afforded a clear view for the pilot in all directions.
The F8F prototypes were ordered in November 1943 and the first took to the air om August 21, 194, only nine months later. The first production aircraft (the F8F-1) were delivered in February 1945, a mere six months after the prototype's first test flight.
VF-19 became the first unit to be equipped with the Bearcat and was operational by by May 21, 1945, but the type arrived too late to see action in WWII, It is worth noting that in comparative trials done during this time, the Bearcat's impressive performance allowed it to outmaneuver most of the jet fighters of that period.
Not feeling quite satisfied with the Bearcat's screenies though. I felt it was a 'lazy' attempt of some sort, even though I didn't rush it.
