Combat in YS. Well... What's left of it.

The biggest hindrance for me when trying to fly with you guys are the time zones. Considering my country is literally half a globe away from the US and the UK, it's often difficult for me to find the right time to join the simplest of events, even an airshow, for that matter.

But that hasn't stopped me from trying. Every weekend morning and evening i'll login to the WW3 server, hoping that maybe a massive furball was about to happen. But it's becoming rarer and rarer every day. The first time I went online back in 2010,the server was filled with flying players. Last year, I've even managed to make friends with the guys ISAF's Raven squadron during the process, weekly flying on their server doing a variety of stuff from escorting Kawasaki C-2's over the Nansei Islands to small furballs of Su-47 Berkuts and F-15 SMTD Eagles. But since the fall of YSP and the original server list, I'm unable to locate them anymore thus leaving me to wonder whether they're still flying or not. Same goes from the days doing Anti-ship and Air-to-Ground Warfare the CVW-171 server at 2.30 A.M in the morning. And boy do I miss doing them all.

Big infamous server's like Neil's, Ice's, and the 241st's we're once a hub for players to meet up and hang out. But since their demise, large player gatherings are now becoming more of a rarity, at least, to me.

Unfortunately for me, I have a major semester exam this year. So I began to drastically cut down the time I spent on the weekends to fly online. But it's over now and I'm eager to make my return to the online skies of YsFlight.

Whoever said we were gone? We may be largely inactive, but we're still here. I've got to give our guys props. Throughout the past couple of months, we've had no activity, but when they were called, almost everyone answered. We're starting to pull things together to see if we can get things back up and running. Granted, a few snags have been hit, but we're making progress.

I dunno, I'd rather keep HQ as it is, but only host combat somewhere else. So there would be a link to HQ where all the general YS and civi stuff would be, and a link for the combat side of things.

Either that or the sub forum idea, not too fond of Sent's idea

Only issue I see with it is fragmentation. Eventually you'll have people who only visit one set of boards or the other, not HQ, and HQ would die off. I'd rather keep the forums on the same website and simply make it very clear that the rules are different when you're in the combat and VA sections. Big red letters that say "AND THEN THERE WAS TROLLING" or something.

I like the concept, but, as Wingz said, fragmentation would be an issue. If we could take that concept, but, as Badger said, apply it to a subforum, it might help.

A problem that I see with that, however, would be containment. We would have to set rules and have a form of punishment ready for when the trolling starts to spread into the other sections. The older, more experienced people, I believe, would be able to keep things pretty well in check, but the young, new guys may not clearly see the dividing line.

So, you could have a separate forum, but have fragmentation.
Or, have a sub-forums, but have to deal with containment.

If we could keep everything in check, then I believe that the sub-forum idea would be the best, if only to keep things as simple as possible. There could still be separate moderators and such, but having everything on the same site would make things easier. It would only be a hassle to have to constantly switch between boards, and eventually people would just stop switching and stay on one board. Plus, it's easier to move a few topics around than create an entirely new site.

I do like the idea Sent, and no, you didn't miss your meds. I just think it needs a little tweaking before it can be applied.

Things should be kept as simple and easy as possible, but still have as much containment (keeping things localized) and separation (separate locations, rules, mods/admins, etc.) as possible.

Ok idea.

HQ: NEWS on development, new mods and various events (aerobatic and so on). Combat DMZ (no rivalries here, just help teach others to fly).
Combat Forum: Squad wars, squad homes and squad events.
Civie forum: VAs and ATC type thing.

Any trolling is contained to the combat forum. Like the Typhoon class's three pressure hulls

Separate the community into two completely separate non-competing forums boards with different goals; that way, the rules of each one would be separate and they wont get blurred (whereas having sub-forums on YSFHQ with separate rules would make it very unclear to distinguish the rules). By "separate", i mean, yes, two completely different websites.

One community would be a civilian community, and they could have the no trolling rules that sit on this forum, as the VAs and aerobatics peeps do seem to be thriving here despite the recent spats I've been having with them. Thus they would take (Direction B).

Then the other community would be a combat community. they would have a thin rulebook which doesn't consist of no-trolling rules, and is a playground for squads and combat heads. in other words, it would take (Direction A).

Each community could be administrated separately by the respective members of interest and would not at all be competing with each other because they would both have completely separate goals. Then we can simply turn YSFHQ into a main site/main portal with a front page that connects the two/hyperlinks the two to each separate forum in one place, and maybe does a few other things such as give general community news and host the server list for both communities.

Good one! Another game that I play has this system. There is a centralised forum and site for game announcements, FAQs, asking for advice, tips and stuff like that. Basically YSFHQ without the Combat/Civilian Sides.

Then everything else is hosted on different sites, with their own rules. It works well and everyone is self regulating. Another thing that could be done is host another two individual forums on HQ's server - only if Ice has not got space/bandwidth restrictions. I don't think that a sub-forum would work. I reckon it'd restrict the combat side, at least, from growing into it's true potential.

Or - If we do head down the line of a sub-forum at least change the forum skin for those sub-forums. That'd give a clear distinction between different parts of HQ.

Example: Black is military, white is general, blue is civilian....

Anyway, I agree with Sent. Hell, I'll even go so far as to pay for a domain name, web server and VPS to make it work.

I have to say, I never in a million years thought I'd see the day that VA's were considered more active than the combat squads, to the point where it was causing trouble. For so long it was the other way around. Amazing how quickly things change.

I agree with Wingzfan. A new forum will lead to a divide between both sides of ysflight, and I still think it is best we embrace combat and civilian flight on the same website.

But the main concern I have with the new forum is the idea of no rules against trolling. As shown by recent events, things get out of hand. People tend to take things too seriously even though ysflight is only a game. The reason YSFHQ was created was the take the community away from the trolling and flaming that occurred at yspilots. However, even with set rules that prohibited flaming, yspilot's community still managed to break apart.

What worries me the most about the new forum is the possible impacts it will have on our community. I'm fairly certain that the combat community can be more hostile than the civilian community, and the tension in the civilian community cause this site to be closed down for 12 hours (something that many were very upset about.) And for those who do not know, yspilots was actually shut down for one week for the constant trolling that happened the forums.

To me, I think the idea of this new forum will combine both of these problems that have already occurred, and I don't want to know what will happen then if this idea is carried the way out as I currently see it.

Someone needs to think of something. I'm quickly losing interest. I hate deliberation.. But that's just me.

If a sub-forum is opened then I don't believe that HQ staff should run it. It needs to be more open, with different people, different ideas and different thinking.

I'd recommend that people like DD-Destroyer, Philster and Rise and Shine among others to be included in that list.

Personally, I think the whole idea of running all together isn't quite in the spirit of what would be intended. If we want to emphasize the squadron element of things, I'd say give a representative of each squad participating an equal hand at the helm. Not necessarily the CO, possibly a member specifically designated to be that squad's forum minder, or whatever. Otherwise, I'd advise keeping leadership to a minimum. Nobody wants to babysit a bunch of squads, they barely want to have to work enough to keep things running. If we do a forum, here or elsewhere, I'd recommend prioritize the "forum" element of it, a place for the exchange of ideas, a place to get together, rather than a place where a small cadre at the top tells people "YOU WILL HAVE FUN, AND THIS IS HOW YOU WILL DO IT."

How about we make a basic sub forum now. And when the need for something arrives, it will be added. So it will develop as we go along and will have just what we need. As for regulation, that can be discussed when the need arises.
