You couldn't be in this and run your squad as the 171st also does ground attack!

I'm not going to apply (sadly) but I was asking for reference.

There have been multi-squad people before.

It's just a 171st rule. If you're with us, you can be in VA's and demo teams, but not in any other squads.

I don't know, everyone has their methods, as well as reasons for those methods, and yours seem to be doing just fine for you. Just curious is all.
More or less, have you seen someone who can match these guys with a mouse when they aren't rusty?
Unlimited and I used to be constantly training with each other, he had a stick and I didn't. While we were close and Maverick taught us well, Unli always had the edge :( . Since I bought a joystick I can appreciate how much more control and refinement a 'stick allows :).

I don't get why there are age and joystick requirements. I guess I can understand the age, seeing as some of the younger guys need a little bit more growing up to do. However, if someone can fly just as good with a mouse and keyboard as they do with a joystick, why not let them. Also, Why do you have a limit set on the number of pilots per subsquad? I should have commented on this earlier, since it brings up some interesting policy questions.
The age thing is, of course, mostly born of maturity concerns. Among other things, being in the 171st involves a lot of time on our TeamSpeak server, where we would prefer not to worry about corrupting innocent youths. (heh)
The joy stick thing largely relates to average potential - in general, though certainly not always, folks can learn our methods a little better with a joystick. The extra cost of it also speaks to a level of commitment we value.
As for limited slots? That is quite deliberate. We want to have to turn people away because we're full. The 171st tends to target particularly skilled combatants, and is already quite large. The English speaking YS community isn't exactly huge - if we've got 20 active members, that means we have about 10% of this forum.

Ok, I think I understand now. Applying to the 171st is sort of like applying to a job, just without the annoying paperwork. You want someone mature enough to value commitment and opportunity. When a slot opens, that person will apply and, if they have the skill, will be accepted. However, if the slot closes, or if they don't have the skill, they will be told to wait until there's another opening. Of course, just like a job, there's also an age restriction.

Correct?ish?

Yes, with the little additional element that we want people who we cannot accept to go on to other squadrons, for the good of the larger combat squadron community.

That's exactly why we put a limit on our numbers. We want people to go elsewhere, other wise we just get too big. Everyone wants to be in the best, so that means others squads only get the poor members and the skilled members do not help the poor members get skilled.

Us rejecting good pilots means their either join others squads and make them better Or make their own squad and create more squads like we want.

If I had gotten into the 171st I'd probably still be a nugget... instead I'm the 2IC of the oldest squad in YSFlight

not to say that its the norm though

There are so seriously long term nuggets, but there are also people who graduate quickly. Making rank isnt really a big deal, but gaining responsibilities is harder

It's stated in forum rules. You're not allowed to be part of more than 1 competitive combat squadron.

I would join, but I am only 14. I meet the requierments. But one, age. If its still there in 6 months. I am in. (Dont think it will be though!)
I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for my signature, I can tell you I don't have one. But what I do have are a very particular lack of skills, skills I have imagined having over a very long career. Skills that make me are completely useless in any situation. If you stop reading now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't stop reading, I will look for you, I will probably not find you, and I will kill your refrigerator.
