Add this to your .dat file:
WPNSHAPE FLR FLYING filepath/to/file/here/flare.srf

Find the filepath of the flare SRF you want, and change the filepath accordingly.

or do i just rename the flr.srf to that?

where do i find the .dat file? in the aircraft folder? also i dont understand how the filepath thing works.. oof
do i rename the flr.srf to "WPNSHAPE FLR FLYING filepath/to/file/here/flare.srf" and paste it in one of the folders?

All weapon skins aside from gun and flare can be changed universally by overwriting the correct file in the misc folder, which changes the default skin. To change a weapon skin for a specific aircraft, you can add the WPNSHAPE line to its .dat. At this point there is no way to change the flare shape for all aircraft aside from editing every single .dat file to include the WPNSHAPE FLR FLYING line.

.dat files for stock aircraft are found in the aircraft folder, but for addon aircraft they can be found in a number of places. Most addons are created to have their files in the user folder, with subfolders for pack or author, but that's not a guarantee. Some install directly into the aircraft folder, others have the pack folder in the main YS folder.

The filepath for the WPNSHAPE line directs YSFlight to the file you want to load, starting from the YS executable you are running. If you put the flare.srf into the misc folder, the filepath would be "misc/flare.srf". If it's in a user folder, the filepath would be "user/Username/weapons/flare.srf" or similar.

And try to edit your posts rather than create new ones if no one has responded.

I highly recommend you read YSFlight Handbook — it include many details on addons installing & customizing ;-)
