Addons don't work

Post by pngmangi »

So I've been trying and trying to get some addons to actually work on my computer, a Mac OSX, but so far I've only gotten one to work. All the others give an error, something like "Cannot read STP" or "Cannot load (whatever file)". I've tried using Decaff_42's pdf guide, but that still didn't solve my problem. Anyone got any advice?

What was the one that worked?
Have you checked the .lst file in the aircraft folder to make sure the file paths are using "/" rather than "\"?
Have you checked to make sure that the files are actually in the location specified in the aircraft .lst file?
Where are you putting the files (locally or in the YSFLIGHT.COM folder in the documents folder?)

What packs were you trying to install?

There are a lot of variables to consider and if one of the above gets things working for you, please let us know!

So the one I got to work was the OHPAircrafts from the Oranleed collection. That went fine, but when I tried installing anything else, all I got was the error message. I've checked most of them like you said, and they all seem to have /, rather than \. I've put the YSFlight folder under Applications, and then the addon files in the package contents in what I'm pretty sure are the right respective folders. I've tried installing a few maps, like Fiji, and I've tried a few aircraft packs, but none of them ever work, apart from the first one. So I really don't know what's going on...

You also have to check the directory of the lst. Hope you understand :)
The A380 is ahead of its time. With the resilient passenger traffic growth for times to come (reference from Airbus's Global Market Forecast), plus congested airports, the A380 could not be ignored.

Thanks! Well, sort of. My parents are missionaries there, so I've pretty much spent my whole life there, but I just recently graduated from high school and have since moved to Finland.

Anyway, no luck so far from anything I've tried with all of your help. So at the moment I'm trying to install the tf58 aircraft pack. I've put the air_tf58.lst file under aircraft in the YSFlight package content folder, and the tf58 folder from user into the user folder in YSFLight. Anything else I should be doing? Because it still isn't working...

welcome! etc etc

Generally what I'd do is after opening the zip is to just select both aircraft and user folders and drag and drop into the YSFlight folder. The modder would have done most of the organisational work, so there shouldn't be any problems.

TF58's stuff was the first mod pack to work on my Linux a couple of years back, so I'm quite surprised to hear it not working on your end. Have you ensured that the user folder is not named "User" (mind the capitalised U) or some other random error? OSX does not recognise "user" and "User" to be the same folder.

Also, I trust you understand filepaths?

Yeah so the user folders are all lower case, so that shouldn't be a problem. But I've attached two screenshots of where the user file and the aircraft files are in the YSFlight package contents thing.

Well, no, I can't say that I know exactly what you're talking about...

I was going to point out that the air_tf58.lst had a different icon from the default aircraft.lst, but then I realised OHP had that different icon...

Would you mind if you post screenshots of the opened lst file (with a text editor), what's inside the tf58 folder and the error that shows up?

Sure, whatever will help!
And that text just keeps going on and on forever...
And also there's a lot more of those errors, pretty much for every single different part...

Ok I'm pretty much stumped at this point. May I have a look in your tf58 folder? The lst file looks fine... :?

Filepaths are basically each of the phrases in the lst. The lst directs the program to look for the specified file in specific folders. Example, the first phrase of the first line:
user/tf58/ac47.dat
What it says to the program:
Look inside the folder "user", inside of which there is a folder called " tf58", inside of which there is a file named "ac47.dat".

etc etc
the same way for all other files, just with different file and folder names

Well, here you go:
It's weird that there isn't nearly as many files in the tf58 folder as there are in the list...

That may be your problem right there. IF there are no files detected then it will pop one of those errors link in your screenshot.

If you've got the files and they are not listed in the lst then there is nothing YSF knows about them and thus ignores.
You've got the opposite problem then.

Where did you get tf58's pack from, his site?

Yes... that certainly seems off. I'm assuming the files are all in alphabetical order, which explains why it can't load ac47.dat, because it doesn't exist on your drive in the first place.

Go back and redownload the zip file. After downloading, make sure there looks to be the correct number of files and double check after extracting.

sniped...

Well that would make sense then. But wouldn't it still load the ones that do exist? Or does it only work if all the files are present?
Yeah so I got the zip file from his site, but since there are a lot of different packages available, does that mean I have to get all of them?

They will load if they are in the expected location from the .lst file.

If you are getting errors for aircraft that are there, then there is something else going on, perhaps with the filenames.

Just download this first one.
Screenshot_20160703-003753.png
EDIT: I see the reason why now. You downloaded the update package, but you still need the main 28MB pack for the whole thing to work and not give you errors. Basically, download both packs, install the main 28MB zip, then install the update on top of that. You should be set from there :)
